Internet Activity in Turkey

Internet connections
As of Summer 1995, Turkey's only gateway to the Internet is through a line connecting Middle East Technical University in Ankara to the USA. This 64Kbps line is leased by Türk Telekom for $150,000 / year.

Hosts within Turkey are connected to each other -- and to METU -- through X.25 lines, supplied by Turpak, a subsidiary of Türk Telekom (previously PTT).

Smaller sites use dial-up for connecting to Internet hosts.

Other on-line services
The first all-Turkish private on-line information service was launched by TAM Bilgisayar Hizmetleri A.S. (TAM Computer Services Inc.) in 1993. This was a credit reporting service that provided information through modem, fax-on-demand, or operator-assisted telephone. The service, named Risk Control Center (Risk Kontrol Merkezi - RKM) had limited success, due to the lack of confidence on the retailers' behalf. It was followed by another on-line service, called Rega for "Resmi Gazete," or The Official Newspaper. Rega is similar to Lexis/Nexis in the United States, with the exception that it carries only one paper. This new service has indexed and keyword search capability, and can be accessed either on-line by modem or through a phone/operator/fax system. Rega is currently a huge success in Turkey.

None of TAM Computer's services was available through the Internet as of September 1995, but the company is currently planning to enter the Internet business soon.

Other on-line services in Turkey include Reuters news agency, and Dow-Jones Telerate for financial information and analysis.
