They were there at the same time - Joe was at Dalton from 1965-75 according
to Wikipedia, and Epstein was there 73-75 per a 2002 NYMag profile

But you're probably right that the Lothario was another man. Joe says "John
Painter" was the chair of the history dept, that his wife left him when she
learned of his affairs, and that he was eventually killed in a motorcycle
accident, none of which lines up with Epstein.

I figured that when writing fiction based on real people you need to throw
in a few red herrings. That said, in 1975 Epstein would have been a mere 22
years old. Probably not him. (Joe was 37).
