I've always thought of any spiritual character who shows up in Joe's work,  
whether it's Jack or Jesus (the woman at the bar), as Joe's own spiritual  
longing -- whether he's consciously aware of it or not.   Maybe I'm  wrong, but it 
seems to me that someone who has God on his mind as much as Joe  does is 
thirsting for truth and inner peace. To me, this search that I  sense, along with 
the possibility that, in fact, he actually has  settled all this for himself 
and but has tapped into everyone else's  midnight (or lunch hour) of the soul, 
is the single most entrancing thing  about Joe's work.
