I've always thought of any spiritual character who shows up in Joe's work,
whether it's Jack or Jesus (the woman at the bar), as Joe's own spiritual
longing -- whether he's consciously aware of it or not. Maybe I'm wrong, but it
seems to me that someone who has God on his mind as much as Joe does is
thirsting for truth and inner peace. To me, this search that I sense, along with
the possibility that, in fact, he actually has settled all this for himself
and but has tapped into everyone else's midnight (or lunch hour) of the soul,
is the single most entrancing thing about Joe's work.
