Rose Ellen Auerbach: Personal Information, Shameless Self-Promotion, and a Quote from Dorothy Parker

These pages are, I'm afraid, woefully out-of-date; links are not guaranteed to work, or to reflect my current whims. For a more current collection of projects 'n' stuff, please see RoseAuerbach.com.

Four be the things I am wiser to know:
Idleness, sorrow, a friend, and a foe.

Four be the things I'd been better without:
Love, curiousity, freckles, and doubt.

Three be the things I shall nev er attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Three be the things I shall have till I die:
Laugter and hope and a sock in the eye.

--Dorothy Parker

There. I always said that when I finally got around to doing a personal page, that poem would be the first thing on it. It's more telling than anything I could ever write about myself.

Not like that's stopping me from having a go at it.

Um, hi, by the way. Thanks for checking ou t my pages. If you'd like to see more of the pages I've designed, stuff I've written, or arty graphics I've made, take a gander at the ever-changing gallery that is Stuff Rose Did.

So, let's see, what is there to say about me? Well, I was named for three of my great-grandmothers. I guess there weren't that many names to go around in the Old Country. I'll answer to just about any part of my full name or any mutations thereof, as long as they're not too insultin g. "Rose" does just fine for most purposes.

I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1994 with a degree in American Studies (college honors, distinguished service award, brag brag). One of these days I'll put up the sections of my senior thesis that reported my original research on community formation over the Internet, but it's going to take a while to get it properly html-ized.

I'm currently back in Los Angeles," but I do keep accounts on the UCSC compu ters in deference to my Santa Cruz geek origins. I while away my days working over at Columbia TriStar Interactive's SoapCity, doing improv over at The Next Stage, writing commentaries on the world (and all its problems), wrangling WesWeb.net, and contending with Cleo the Wonder Cat. My mother thinks I'm the next Molly Ivins. One of my lit professors said I could be the new Dorothy Parker. If I publicized my recorder-playing more, someone would probably try to convince me to pick up the guitar and become the next Dyl an. Thanks, folks, but I'm the first Rose Ellen Auerbach. I really don't care if that sounds egocentric--that's what I am, and what I want to be. (Okay, cue the Bradys! "Sha-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na... Sha-na-na-na-na..." Hmm, I really should fin d a picture of me dressed as the anti-Cindy to put up here...)

So here I am. Rose Ellen Auerbach, the Trivia Queen, specializing in American history and politics, international affairs, Jewish oral tradition, and major depression and its treatm ents, and occasionally winning Ben Stein's Money. I like chocolate and folk dancing, and don't like loud bars or people who flake on me all the time. I plan to write some books and plays, earn some more degrees, and save the world with a laptop computer, though not necessarily in that order. I've been around since 7 October 1972 at 5:49 in the morning, and plan to be here for a while longer. It's been a life of laughter and hope and a sock in the eye, and I hope I'm just getting started.
