Chapter 4<P> Using menus
Using menus
To open a menu from a menu bar, click on the menu name. Then
select an item from that menu by clicking on the item.
Here are some tips to help you predict what will happen when you
select a menu item:
a menu item followed by a triangle
indicates that a submenu will open, containing additional menu items.
a menu item followed by ellipses
means that you will be asked to perform an action
related to your selection, such as entering a filename in a dialog
box field.
a dimmed menu item
shows that the item is not available at this time.
The Desktop provides the following types of menus:
Desktop menus
are located at the top of the Desktop and are used to
control the appearance of the Desktop and desktop windows and
the icons displayed there.
Directory menus
are located at the top of directory windows and used
to control the appearance of those windows and the icons displayed there.
Icon menus
are accessed by holding down mouse button 3 on object icons and are
used to perform such tasks as opening or copying the icon to a
specified directory.
The graphical environment also includes:
Window menus
which are provided on all windows and accessed by clicking on the
Window menu button in the upperleft corner of the window's frame;
use these menu items for such tasks
as restoring, moving, resizing, minimizing, maximizing, lowering, and
closing windows.
Root menu
which is accessed by holding down either mouse button 1 or 2
anywhere on the main Desktop's background; use this menu
for such tasks as
restarting the Desktop, refreshing the screen if it is garbled by
line noise, and getting help.
