Guide to Gateways for LAN Servers
Chapter 3, Administering SCO Gateway for NetWare

NLMs, UNIX system permissions and NetWare rights

NLMs, UNIX system permissions and NetWare rights

Without NUC and NFS NLMs, SCO Gateway for NetWare filesystems have DOS filename restrictions, as well as Novell permission semantics. Almost no information is provided to SCO Gateway for NetWare for incorporation into the UNIX system permission information. See ``Troubleshooting SCO Gateway for NetWare filesystems without NUC and NFS NLMs''.

With NLMs, SCO Gateway for NetWare filesystems have UNIX system filename capabilities. As well, Novell permission semantics are translated into UNIX system permission semantics. Note that NetWare has more file and directory permissions than does the UNIX system. Many NetWare permissions do not map directly to the UNIX system permissions. The major permission relationships are:

Table 3-1 UNIX and NetWare file permission relationships

 ----------------------------------------------------
 UNIX NetWare
 ----------------------------------------------------
 read read and file scan
write write, create, modify, erase and file scan
 execute read, file scan

 read read and file scan
write write, create, erase and modify
 execute file scan

For an explanation of NetWare file and directory permissions, see the ``Rights Security'' section of your NetWare Concepts manual.
