Tejas Edwards On Vacation

This year I've decided to bring some of my digital goodies with me on vacation. I'm planning on downloading pictures and info every few days, depending on my finding Motels with phones that will allow me to download my words of wit and pictures of praise.
First let me start with, this vacation was not really planned, just the date was planned so my Father and my schedule would match up. When people asked where we were planning on going, we replied "don't know yet, probably know when we get there". And this went on for months up to the date we decided to leave. It was unanimous we decided to go . . . . North.

Ok folks here we go:

Day one: Leave Santa Cruz for Sunnyvale to pick up my Dad. Did I tell you he lives in Sunnyvale. Anyway we left Sunnyvale and started driving north on US101 and stopped for the night in Fort Bragg. We liked it so much we decided to stay an extra day!

This is a picture of my dad, taken in the Motel in Fort Bragg.

Day two: First we tried a road that was billed as: Fort Bragg - Sherwood Rd. Connects Fort Bragg on HW1 to Willits on US101. Discribed as "A remote east-west drive on a county-maintained road through rugged mountains between the coast and US101. Perhaps the most adventuresome moter route between the coast and inland areas. Difficulty: Easy to moderate" First we had some trouble finding the correct road, so we asked for directions.

After talking with someone who was familiar with the local terrain we attempted the road, but alas we were stopped by an unclimbable hill, one would need a winch to make it up that road. After turning arround we talked with another set of locals, who told us that they had been there 3 or 4 years and had never attempted that road.

We then pushed on for another easy adventure, down Usal Road. Usal Rd. was part of an 1860's stagecoach route between San Francisco and Eureka. Author Jack London and his wife drove it in a horse-drawn carriage in 1911. With all that we found a wonderful black sand beach named Bear Harbor. Where we had lunch. If anyone is looking for a realy out of the way beach I would recommend this one. Just remember you have 32 miles of wild dirt road.

Day three: Fort Bragg to Fortuna (Humbold County). Short day of rambling through the red woods, dodging lumber trucks. Going up HW1 to US101, after checking in one of the local motels. Dad and I did some exploring in the area, found some very nice vista's.

Troopers current dirt level.
