The Computer Zone
We have had experiences from the past that have got us to this point. We also, from our own hobbie standpoint have wanted to do this just the same.. Your asking yourself.. huh?
Well... We are going to create the PlayaNET! What this will be is, several things all boiled into one main resource. For this year (1999) Our main goal is to get a network onto the playa that consists of a main server, probably a pentium IBM clone computer. This will store all of our main info, like NIS, and files. Now, from here, we will attach several other computers, via a network cable in our camp, AND if we can communicate PRIOR to the event with other camps, we want to tie into other camps networks via a wireless device. This is the first part of our camp idea.

The second and most important in my opinion, is a new message center. Last year (1998) I was in a rough situation. There was a nasty car accident, and I helped out as much as I could. When the victoms were hauled off to the hospital, I had the task of finding ONE person, out of 15,000... Man.. what a nightmare. So After looking ALL night long, and with the help on many many people, we still did not find the person. So... How to solve this.... If there was a basic simple computer terminal database that everyone could use, then "wella!" We could find people much easier. This is how it would work.
  • We would put groups of terminals in center camp, and anywhere we could get away with putting them. The catch is this, they need to be tied into the main server, which would hold the database files.
  • These terminals would need to be spread out so people can access them easily no matter where they are. If there was one batch of terminals in center camp, and one near each end of the man (ie: One cluster near neptune, one near mercury - Map )
