Take a look at the games we played in 2002 or 2003.

January 10

11:00 AM Brother Against Brother by Matt Hilzendrager. It's September of 1862, at "The Bloody Lane" near Antietam. John Gordon's 6th Alabama fends off the Union Army in the Civil War's bloodiest battle. GM to provide all the stuff, just show up and play. 25mm ACW.
11:00 AM A Few Hard Days by Ix Nichols. It's the spring of '43 and with a roll of thunder courtesy of Stalin's own God of War, the Soviet juggernaut stomps across the steppes. A depleted and reeling German Wehrmacht must slow it enough to stave off defeat. This will be another test game of Kent Reuber's Patton Rules, a fast and easy set of operational-level WWII rules, where each stand is battalion-sized, and a multi-day battle can be played in an afternoon. Everything provided, except your will to fight and tactical acumen.
12:00 PM Viva España! by Bob Bergman. Another in the continuing 20mm scale Spanish Civil War series using Rapid Fire rules with the Rompan el Fuego supplement. This time, all players will take the part of Republican factions working to eject a Nationalist force from the town of Los Cajones, somewhere in the south of Spain. Each player will have a brigade of troops, consisting of 2-3 battalions with a few attached machineguns or mortars, and a possibility of air support or some armored reinforcements. Each player will also have separate victory conditions that may or may not involve cooperation with other Republican players! Factions will includes Communists, Socialists, Anarchists, Basques, Regular Army, and there may be more than one force for a faction (if there is sufficient interest).
If you would like to play, email Bob Bergman and tell him (especially if you have troops to bring, or want to play a particular faction). There will be plenty of troops available, but your own miniatures are welcome.
6:00 PM The Napoleonic Wars by Ix Nichols. Another session of the excellent GMT strategic game covering the entire Napoleonic Wars. No experience necessary, come and learn if you've ever wanted to. Up to 5 players, and the more the better. Nobody has to play Prussia if they don't want to.

February 15

NOTE: this meeting of the South Bay Gaming Club was moved to Sunday, because Saturday the 14th was Valentine's Day and it is in the interest of the club to avoid a multiple homicide by a mob of scorned wives.

11:00 AM Hastings 1066. Darrell Empey and Gary Price will present the Battle of Hastings in 25mm using Shieldwall (Warhammer Ancients). Room for up to four additional players. Figures provided.
11:00 AM The Battle for Lorraine, August 1914 by Chris Salander. The French Army executes Plan XIX and takes the offensive to recover the lost provinces of Alsace and Lorraine. Can the red and blue poilus with their quick-firing 75s break the lines of grey, or will the machine gun win the day? 20mm Fast Play WWI rules: Square Bashing
1:00 PM Aerodrome II: Carrier War! by Stan Kubiak. Test out some new Aerodrome II concepts as we try carrier combat in the Pacific in 1/144th scale (except for the carriers, which will be a decidedly smaller scale than that!). Torpedo attacks and dive bombing are on the program; new larger mats and small bases will be used for additional flying room. Players will control multiple aircraft, using a different mechanism than the usual wooden control panels. Aerodrome II as you've never quite played it before!
2:00 PM Sidi Rezegh, by Jon Baldwin using Kamfgruppe Commander. In mid-November, 1941 the British launched Operation Crusader in an attempt to break the German siege on Tobruk. Recognizing the threat, on 22 November Rommel counter-attacks the 8th Army's leading elements at Sidi Rezegh airfield.

March 13

11:00 AM Obsidian versus Steel by Chris Salander. Conquistadors versus Aztecs! Adventurers, soldiers, and dispossessed nobles from Spain arrive in Mexico to establish a New World Order. But the Aztecs have found out that they are not gods and plan to sacrifice each one they catch. Will the Tlaxcallan allies make the difference? Renaissance Tactica in 25mm. 6 players.
11:00 AM Manstein Rules! by Ix Nichols. Another playtest of Kent Reuber's Patton Rules!, the operational WW II game based on (don't laugh) Chipco's Fantasy Rules! Several corps of Soviet men and machinery will attempt to outmaneuver and smash a smaller but quicker Wehrmacht holding force. Any number of players, all cute little miniatures and terrain features provided.
11:00 AM Square Bashing by Bob Bergman. 1914 WWI scenarios pitting the Germans against French and British troops using 15mm figures. Designed to introduce players to the "Square Bashing" rules from RAFM and distributed by Peter Pig. Future games will have Serbia vs. Austro-Hungary, and Turks vs. Serbs, British, etc., including some possible "what if" scenarios. All figures and terrain provided.
3:00 PM A Day in the Park: Pavia 1525 by Eric Lindberg. The classic battle of the Italian Wars, using the latest version of DBR.
6:00 PM The Napoleonic Wars by Ix Nichols. Another game of GMT's board game The Napoleonic Wars .

April 10

11:00 AM Warhammer Fantasy. A Bretonnian army (from the new list, recently published) will test its wings against a modest Chaos incursion. 2500-point armies. Hosted by Phil Chiu and Gary Price.
11:00 AM Aztecs versus Spanish, 1521 A.D. Renaissance Tactica in 25mm, by Chris Salander. After being wiped out in March, the Spanish have re-armed and reinforced and are coming back more determined than ever to find the gold and conquer the New World. 6 players.
2:00 PM Kampfgruppe Commander by Jon Baldwin. Another game of the grand-tactical WW II miniatures game formerly known as Clash of Armor. Come push the wee tanks into another day of 1940's armored mayhem.
2:00 PM Battle of Blore Heath by Eric Lindberg. A Wars of the Roses battle using 15mm figures and Chipco's Days of Knights rules. A greatly outnumbered Yorkist force under the Earl of Salisbury holds his ground against the Lancastrians led by Lord Audley. This is a playtest of some of the new ideas being proposed for these rules.

May 8

11:00 AM Pirates! An extravaganza by Rod Thomson, of Flagship Games. This will be a big game for up to 16 people. Bring your own boats! Bring your own crews! Bring your own eye patch! Arrrrrr!
11:00 AM Flodden. On a grand tour of the English countryside, a great troop of Scots stops to fertilize a muddy field on the banks of the River Till with the help of their English hosts. A recreation of the famous sodden slugfest of 1513 using Renaissance Tactica, by the usual suspects (Chris Salander, Doug Lange, Bob Burke, and hundreds of tiny lead comrades). Everything provided. Wear your grubby clothes....
11:00 AM Fuentes d'Onoro by Milton Soong. Wellington and Massena duke it out in a famous battle of the Peninsular War. This will use Milton's 15mm troops and a newer set of rules called Grande Armee by Sam Mustapha.

June 12

11:00 AM Aztecs versus Conquistadors by Chris Salander, using 25mm Renaissance Tactica. This is the final playtest. With 1 win for each side, this one is for all the chips (and salsa). Will the War Dogs make an appearance?
11:00 AM Not Your Father's Middle Ages by Luis Medrano. In the misty past, an army of brave knights and their stolid followers meet on the field do battle with... High Elves? Luis will be bringing two 2000 point armies, one a Medieval WAB army, and the other his WFB High Elf army, for a game of Warhammer Battles. You can probably determine which game will be played if you bring your own army.
1:00 PM Armored Division by Kent Reuber. Bruce McFarlane (author of "Great Battles of World War 2"), has a new grand tactical set of rules in playtest called "Armored Division", with each stand equal to a battalion. Kent will be giving it a go.
6:00 PM River Bottom Blues by Ix Nichols. At a lazy river crossing in the deep South, rebel troops try to stop a crossing in force by Federal troops at a swampy bayou. A 15mm ACW meeting engagement using Fire and Fury, for any number of players.

July 10

10:00 AM. El Cid by Gary Price and Jim Yonemura. A set-piece battle featuring a fast-moving Moorish army against a Spanish Christian force, using Warhammer Ancients.
11:00 AM Memoir '44 by Dave Smith. This is the new game of the D-Day invasion based on the Battle Cry system. Dave will have a couple copies with him, so you can give the game a try.
11:00 AM Rapid Fire! by Pete Michels. The US 3rd Armored and the German 116th Panzer divisions battle it out in the ETO circa September '44. Players will pick sides and then receive randomly generated force pools (from the scenario generator (SG) tables published in the SOTCW Summer 2002 journal), including objectives and deployment orders, some or all of which may be secret (even from your own side!). All forces and terrain provided (in 20mm scale, of course), but if you want to bring your own toys, send Pete some email. Just bring dice and something to measure with. Beginners welcome.
11:00 AM Battles for Empire by Nick Stern. A classic colonial scenario: a British relief column attempts to force a mountain pass in Afghanistan, circa 1895, using the Battles for Empire colonial rules. Up to 8 players, everything provided.
12:00 AM The Big Pushki by Ix Nichols. Another playtest of Bruce McFarlane's new (and yet unpublished) Armored Division rules, once more pitting teeny Soviets against diminutive Germans in a Microarmor brawl on the East Front in '44.
6:00 PM Fire and Fury by Ix Nichols. A desperate force of rebels tries to stop a Union advance up the Roanoke River. The entire drama will be played out in 15mm scale using Fire and Fury. Those wearing appropriate hats will be rewarded with bonuses in the game. Everything provided (except hats).

August 14

11:00 AM Big Trouble In Africa by Milton Soong. In 1898, somewhere in the middle of Africa, a whacky cast of miniature characters go about their individual quests. You, yes you! could be one of those characters...
11:00 AM Party in the Crimea by Bob Burke. The Crimean campaign comes to life in miniature, using They Died for Glory.
12:00 PM Fire and Fury by Pete Michels, Doug Ferrell, and Ix Nichols. An alternate Gettysburg scenario - Lee actually listens to Longstreet, and tries to pull out of Seminary Ridge to go around the Union left flank. Uncharacteristically, Meade attacks to forestall the movement. The outcome is up to the players.
2:00 PM Warrior Kings -- The Three Kingdoms by Eric Lindberg and Mike Kroon. Battles in the times of the Three Kingdoms, the Chinese equivalent of the Arthurian age. (With the exception that everyone was generally much more literate.) A playtest of the Warrior Kings rules, a simple fast-play Ancients system. You can download the map, army lists, and campaign rules if you'd like to see them ahead of time.
6:00 PM General Quarters by Ix Nichols. What if Italy had joined the Central Powers instead of the Allies in WW I? Well, okay, nobody really cares, but it's a good excuse to play a WW I naval game with miniatures that would otherwise never see the light of day. Come assume command of a division of French or Italian warships as they grope about the Western Mediterranean in search of each other, and victory.

September 11

11:00 AM Seven Years War by Stan Kubiak. The Austrians fight off the Prussians and Russians together, during the brief period when Frederick had the Tsarina on his side. Stan will be using Patriots and Loyalists (an AWI rules set) and 15mm troops. Up to 8 players.
11:00 AM Patton Takes on the Russkies - 1945 by Richard D. Henkus. The Cold War turns hot in 1945. In the Winter of 1945, two Sovient tank brigades and a supporting rifle regiment have broken through the front line and are heading to a vital crossroads and town defended by an American regimental combat team. Will CCA from Patton's own 2nd Armored arrive in team and, in tandem with elements of the Army Air Corps, sucessfully take on the Russkies? Using the Active Armor computer assisted WWII operation level rules. 2-3 players.
11:00 AM General Quarters by Ix Nichols. The French and Italians square off again, in an ahistorical battleship brawl in 1/6000 scale. Everything provided, any number of players.

October 9

11:00 AM Tactica II by Chris Salander and Doug Lange. Two Macedonian Successor armies go head-to-head in a test of the newest Tactica revision, which has a bunch of new features: variable, point-based army lists; graduated (not fatal) flank attacks; and impetus. If there's time, there could be a second game against the Persians.
11:00 AM Active Armor by Richard Henkus. Another high-level WW2 bash between the formerly allied US and Soviet forces in Germany, using Richard's computer assisted rules. Up to 4 players, everything provided.
1:00 PM DOK2 - Battle of Fornovo, 1499. by Eric Lindberg. More playtesting of the proposed second edition Days of Knights rules. This time there will be some more boundary-testing, playing a scenario of one of the first battles of the Italian Wars and one of the last battles decided exclusively by a charge of knights on both sides.

November 13

11:00 AM Indian Mutiny by Nick Stern. The 1857 Siege of Delhi in miniature, using either The Sword and the Flame or Brother Against Brother and Nick's 25mm figures. Up to 8 players.
11:00 AM The Battle of the Indus by Chris, Bob, and Doug. Alexander's Macedonians take on King Porus' ancient Indians. Will the Boy Wonder do it again, or will the King have the Big Mac for lunch? Another playtest of Tactica II. The first playtest included some surprises and thrills and disappointments. 15mm, 1500 pt armies. Just in time for the release of the movie!
11:00 AM Shootout in Loma Sonoma by Mark Holt. Bad Guys are holed up in the sleepy town of Loma Sonoma, and the Sheriff and a small posse are combing the town trying to flush out them evil doers. The townsfolk are reluctant to help, but will gain courage as each of the scoundrels is brought to justice... or otherwise eliminated. 6-8 players, everything provided.
1:00 PM Operational ACW Shootout, round 1. by Kent Reuber. Kent has decided to try various "big battle" rules for the American Civil War, by playing the same battle with several sets of rules to test which ones feel right. The scenario he's chosen is Stones River (Murfreesboro), and this month the rules will be Phil Barker's Horse Foot and Guns, which you can read about at the Horse, Foot and Guns Yahoo group.

In the coming months, Kent also plans to try "Volley and Bayonet", Chipco's "Le Petite Emperor" (or perhaps the ACW rules from "Fantasy Rules 3"), and perhaps others such as Alienstar's "Into Glory Ride". Other suggestions are welcome.

6:00 PM Rebellion in the colonies. by Brian DeWitt. With a Gallic twist to the usual Wellsian wargaming tradition, a French force tries to put down a colonial rebellion using Brian DeWitt's own home rules and 25mm figures.

December 11

11:00 AM The Battle of Squidway a Pirates! game by Thomas Foss. Goblin forces have mustered a fleet of flat tops to take on the dwarven threat of their gyro carriers. The prize - Squidway island.
11:00 AM Battleground WWII by Lawrence Goslinowski. Big miniatures meet on a big table to get in a big fight during the biggest war in history.
1:00 PM Operational ACW Shootout, round 2. by Kent Reuber. Another playtest of operational ACW rules using the battle of Stones River (Murfreesboro) as the litmus. This time the rules will be an adaptation of Chipco's Le Petit Empereur.
2:00 PM Aerodrome 1.1 by Stan Kubiak. We haven't had a good Aerodrome dust-up in a while, so Stan Kubiak is going to bring out the World War 1 planes for an afternoon (and early evening?) of fun. We'll be trying out a new tournament scoring system devised by an Aerodrome enthusiast from the Midwest, and prizes will be awarded in a number of categories.

If that's not enough to pique your interest, Stan will have the newly updated (at LONG last!) SBGC Aerodrome 1.1 Victory rosters along; find out where you stand! We have several of new Legion of Honor members (25 or more victories) who will need to claim their Blue Max medals: Rob Baron (32), Michael Ackerman (31), Katharyn Roberts (28), Ix Nichols (27) and Jim Yonemura (25). And there will be a special award for Lawrence Goslinowski, who has indeed passed 100 victories!

Scheduling Policy

If you'd like to submit a game, you can mail it to the webmaster. Please include a brief description of the game, a start time, and the size/number of tables required. If you don't specify a time, the game will be scheduled at either 11:00 AM or 6:00 PM (whichever the scheduler considers more convenient), and the default table size is 4' x 8'.

You may include downloadable files with your game description if you think it will help players prepare or increase interest in the game, but please provide them to the webmaster in a common readable format (such as PDF, text, HTML, JPEG, GIF, etc.). Many people can't read MS Word, Excel and Power Point files, so please be forewarned that the webmaster will grumble at you in a religious vein about internet standards if you submit files in one of these formats.

As a matter of policy, the club does not post contact information for individual members on the Web site. If you wish to have an e-mail address or phone number listed with your event, you will have to make the request explicitly each time you offer a game. Also, if you want a favorite link added to the web site, provide the URL and a brief explanation of why the link might be of interest.
