CHOLESTEROL FREE PARRALLEL PORT EPROM PROGRAMMER - Programms 2764 to 27512 (ADAPTOR FOR 2716/32 AND SOME MICROS) - Fast or Slow Programming - Easy to Assemble - Self Diagnosing - Inexpensive to Build - Easy to Obtain Parts (Australia) - Full Schematics, PCB and Overlay - Free Software - C Source Code Supplied - Easy Enough for a 5 year old tibetan spaniel to build RTFM Instructions The following instructions are designed for people with little construction experience. If you are finding them more than just a little tedious I would suggest reading the diet instructions in the file INS_KISS.TXT. Assembly. Tip #1 Get a good soldering iron there are lots of closely spaced pins. You are probably wasting your time with a chunky plumblers iron. Tip #2 Make sure you have a Multimeter, Voltmeter, Multitester or 1Gs real time scope before starting. You realy do need one to adjust the voltage at the end of it all. Tip #3 Check all components are in the right place/around the right way/the right type/not actually your pet hampster before soldering. Desoldering is a pain with out a gun (if you do enough electonic work to justify a desoldering gun why are you reading this). Start by installing all 9 wire links as these are hard to get at after the other components are installed. For the three longest links it might be a good idea to use insulated wire. There are 3 links in the top right hand corner under the voltage regulators, two just to the left of the switch, two between the 74393's and the 28 pin socket and two at the bottom of the board to the left of the IDC socket. Next install all the resistors (14). R14 shown in the overlay as ???? is choosen according to the type of 74595 you are using. Also Q7 the optional MPSA65 Xistor will need to be installed with some chips to make the clock fast enough. If Q7 does need to be installed the track next to it will need to be cut where marked. R14 Chip Type Q7 4k7 ANY LS No 560R Texas HC No 220R Motorola HC Yes After the R's install the IC's and the 28 pin socket. The IC's can only be soldered one way round. The end of the IC with a notch in it or a dot/dimple in one corner is pin 1. This end must match up with the notch in the overlay. Be carefull with the IC's allthough they are fairly heat tolerant you can fry them with over enthusiastic soldering. The 3 1N4004 diodes also have to be installed the right way around. The end with the white stripe on has to match the stripe in the overlay. The 6 Xistrs can now be installed making sure you follow the key on the overlay. Q7 the optional MPSA65 Xistor should now also be installed if necsesary and the track next to it cut. All the Caps (8) should be installed noting the polarity of the 4 Electros and 1 Tant (The longer leg is +ve or on the Electros -ve is marked on the plastic body). To finnish of you only need to install the Trimpot the 3 VRegs, the switch the LED and the two conectors. When installing the VRegs the LM317 should be wrapped in sticky tape to prevent its case touching the case of the 7805. This is because it's case is output rather than ground. If the metal cases on the regulators do touch you WILL blow up chips. Testing. Plug the programmer into 12VAC and check that there is about 5V at the IC's. VCC and GND are at the top right and bottom left of an IC when it is standing up-down. Test the voltage between ground and all the parrallel port pins to make sure none are much above 5V. If both of these tests check out OK plug the unit into a PC. Run the Program TESTHW.EXE and follow the screen instructions to test EPROM voltages. If all is OK Run-Test the unit by running the programming software to program and read back an EPROM. The Software. The programmer uses different software for different EPROMS as outlined below EPROM Type Fast Program Slow Program 27X64 F64.EXE S64.EXE 27X128 F128.EXE S128.EXE 27X256 F256.EXE S256.EXE 27X512 F512.EXE S512.EXE Also when programming 27X512's you must move the switch into the down position. WARNING - DON'T PLUG AN EPROM IN UNTIL THE SW TELLS YOU TO. When run the software searches all three ports for the hardware and calibrates its timmer. Apart from that the software is menu driven and self explanatory. ENJOY IN MODERATION.
