THE MICROCOMPUTER MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Cabrillo College's Microcomputer Management Program offers two options to prepare you for a career in this new field.
- A certificate of proficiency involves a rigorous two-year program which combines classroom study, hands-on work in our computer lab and practical experience through an internship.
- An Associate in Science Degree can be earned by completing the core Certificate courses, plus 21 units of General Education requirements and electives to total 60 units.
Students who wish to enter the program should see a counselor and consult with department faculty to determine current program requirements.
Career Opportunities
The proliferation of microcomputers in businesses and organizations of all sizes has created numerous new employment opportunities. Businesses, organizations and government agencies need staff to install and maintain microcomputer software and hardware, and to support and train the users of microcomputer systems. All major software developers need people with current knowledge of their products and effective communication skills to provide telephone support to their customers. Cabrillo's Microcomputer Management Program provides you with these marketable skills. Completion of the program will prepare you for a career in this rapidly expanding field.

- CS 1 Introduction to Microcomputers

A practical, hands-on introduction to the world of microcomputer hardware and software. This survey course blends hands-on instruction in word-processor, spreadsheet and database software with discussions regarding their appropriate use, social impact, and future applications.
- MM 101A Introduction to Microcomputer Management

Introduction to the field of microcomputer management. Covers employment opportunities and requirements, elementary technical support skills and the fundamentals of applications software and computer systems.
- CAOS 141AB Using Microcomputer Spreadsheets/Excel

An introduction to the concepts involved in microcomputer spreadsheets including charts and databases. Uses Microsoft Excel.
- CAOS 150 Using FoxPro for Windows

An introduction to the use and application of FoxPro for Windows in interactive (i.e. non-programmed) mode, with an emphasis on the set of features and commands which are common to dBase-compatible database management software.
- MM 101B Microcomputer Management Assessment

Assessment of fundamental knowledge and skills regarding microcomputer hardware, systems software, and applications software. Co-requisites: CS 1, MM 101A, CAOS 141AB, CAOS 150.
Offered at the end of the semester.
- ENGL 157/BUS 157 Business and Technical Writing

Learn techniques and strategies for writing, organizing, and editing business and technical documents. Note that to enter ENGL 157 you must either be eligible for ENGL 1A or have completed ENGL 100 and BUS 156 prior to taking this course.
- CAOS 181AB Operating Systems: Beginning/Intermediate DOS

A detailed introduction to the nature and use of the PC Disk Operating System, including common commands, disk structure and formatting, file operations, directory tree structures, pipes, hard disk management, and batch file programming.
- CAOS 160AB Computer Networks and the Internet

Introduction and study of computer networks with focus on the Internet, network theory, the OSI model, uses of the Internet, and local area networks.
- CAOS 151 Programming in FoxPro for Windows

An introduction to computer programming using FoxPro for Windows for development of microcomputer applications systems in business and other areas. Prerequisite: CAOS 150.
- CAOS 162 Microcomputer Installation and Maintenance

A comprehensive course in installing, integrating, organizing, and maintaining the hardware and software components of a microcomputer system. There is an emphasis upon managing hard disk systems, including installation, configuration, organization, backup techniques, advanced batch file programming. and problem-solving. Prerequisite: CAOS 181AB
- MM 103 Technical Support Skills

Technical support skills for those seeking employment in the microcomputer management field. Topics include training in the various means of delivering technical support and tools for gathering, organizing, and disseminating technical information. Prerequisites: CAOS 161, CAOS 162 (Both may be taken concurrently.)
- CAOS 161 Network Administration

An introduction to the theory, installation, use, and administration of local area networks. Hands-on work with Novell Netware. Includes the OSI model, telecommunications, remote access, and wide-area networks. Prerequisite: CAOS 160
- CAOS 163 Windows - Installation, Configuration, Usage

Covers installation and use of Windows. Topics covered include graphical use interface (GUI) principles, memory management, DOS utilities, installation of applications software, dynamic data links, multi-tasking concepts, Windows add-ons, and interfacing with peripheral devices in the Windows environment. Prerequisite: CAOS 181AB
- MM 120 Microcomputer Management Comprehensive Exam

Review followed by a comprehensive exam on the following topics: microcomputer hardware, applications software, operating systems, local area networks, technical writing, technical support skills. Prerequisite: MM 103 (may be taken concurrently)
- CS 199 Work Experience - Internship
-
This involves 12 to 15 hours of work experience per week during the final semester in the Microcomputer Management program. Students may staff the campus help-desk providing technical support to college staff and install and maintain campus systems. This requirement may also be fulfilled by arranging off-campus internships with business or government organizations. Prerequisite: MM 120
- MM 115 Microcomputer Management Employment Seminar

Students will research current career opportunities in the microcomputer management field, develop employment objectives, write resumes and practice interviewing skills. Prerequisitie: MM103
