HORTICULTURE

THE PROGRAM

The Cabrillo Horticulture program prepares students for entry-level jobs in horticulture businesses; it provides a foundation for people who plan to transfer to four-year programs in ornamental horticulture or landscape architecture, and it affords local horticulturists the means to upgrade their skills and knowledge. The college offers two Associate in Science degrees and two Certificates of Proficiency in Horticulture.

THE FACILITY

Most of the horticulture class laboratories are held in the college horticulture facility at the east end of the campus. The facility includes four greenhouses (approximately 3,500 sq. ft.), a tool shed, three shade houses, a propagation house, and a half acre of flowers, vegetables, herbs and California native plants.

SKILLS

Students learn the fundamentals of soil management; propagation and crop production; integrated pest management; plant identification; landscape design, construction and maintenance; greenhouse design and operation. Students receive both classroom instruction and outdoor laboratory experience in the Cabrillo garden horticulture facility. Additional training can be acquired through special projects and the production and sale of student-grown food crops and ornamental nursery stock during the semester. Cabrillo also offers instruction in pesticide use and safety as preparation for state licensing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Although working conditions vary, surroundings are usually pleasant. Salaries for horticulturists vary with experience, education and responsibility. Entry-level positions may start at minimum wage, but advancement in the private sector may increase earnings to $20,000 or more per year for middle management positions. The employment outlook continues to be excellent and there are increasing opportunities for individuals to start their own businesses.
