Because different reporters received different facts, not all reports are consistent. No attempt has been made in this account to determine which reports were accurate.

George Washington University closes the university to outsiders and cancels a talk entitled “Imperialist Globalization: Its Impact on the Environment and Human Rights” sponsored by Amnesty International

Two environmental activists attempt to scale the world bank building to hang a banner as others lock themselves to a vehicle in the intersection below. Traffic is blocked for over an hour.

300 people attend protest march of the Interfaith Working Group on the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Protestors call for an end to the external debt of the poorest countries. Marchers were blocked by a police line and were not allowed to enter the World Bank meeting to deliver a cross with the names of poor indebted nations etched in it. The public relations chief and his assistant greeted protestors.

Two cars seen leaving an organizing meeting are pulled over and searched without consent. 7 People arrested. The National Lawyers Guild sends letter to Attorney General Janet Reno.

After pressure from the National Association of Broadcasters and National Public Radio, the House of Representatives votes 274 to 110 to stop implementation of Federal Communications Commission rules allowing licensing of micro (low power) radio stations.

Fire Marshals enter the Convergence Center at 1328 Florida St and declared that the Center must be cleared within 30 seconds or the police will be called due to a fire code violation. Officers immediately already enter the Center and began clearing the space. Police provide no warrant for entering the space and were not wearing badges. The only press allowed into the scene were from ABC, Associated Press, or others with government passes. One woman is denied access to her insulin supplies.

678 arrested for parading without a permit at Protest against the Prison Industrial Complex. Arrestees include Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post Photographer Carol Guzy. A World Bank consultant arrested in the prison demonstration. After being held for 23 hours, he is released with no charges and no explanation.

Police on foot and motorcycles attempt to clear intersection at 15th and Pennsylvania. One demonstrator was taken to the hospital for possible internal wounds due to a club strike to the abdomen. An Associated Press reporter is struck in the head and lay bleeding in the street. Secret Service pull out tear gas canisters at 17th and Pennsylvania in response to police action at 15th St. Bystanders report that motorcycle police charged and ran over protestors lying and standing in the intersection.

21st and G, a bus pulls up and 25 riot-clad officers enter an 11-person lockdown and begin to beat demonstrators. At least one activist has his nose broken. Police attack twice before a protestor throws an orange pylon at them, causing a third attack.

Late afternoon at 17th and Constitution, 250 police attempt to unblock intersection. One demonstrator is nearly trampled by a horse when the policeman drops the reins.

IMC reports that at least 3 - 4 people have been admitted to George Washington University Hospital for injuries

Up to 200 people arrested in the vicinity of 17th and M St. to 18th and K St., including a legal observer. Eyewitness reports tear gas, rubber bullets, and concussion grenades are used.

5000 protestors surrounded at 20th and I. Eventually protestors are allowed to peacefully cross the police barricade and be arrested.

IMC Reports arrival of National Guard in DC

Mobilization Radio, a micro radio station providing information to protestors, is surrounded by DC Police, FBI, and an official from the Federal Communications Commission. By 4:00 pm, a crowd of about 300 demonstrators arrive at mobilization radio. All police leave the scene, and the station is dismantled and removed from the scene.

Demonstrators allowed back into convergence center in groups of three to obtain personal effects after a dump truck hauls off an estimated $3000 in goods. It is announced that center will be reopened on Tuesday at 10:00 am. Several people report missing items, particularly video recorders and cameras

By end of evening, 250 people still held in prison. 2 demonstrators were held for hours, then sent to Hadley Hospital for severe hypothermia. Demonstrators were not given access to their lawyers, who stood outside the jail.

12 or more Federal Marshals attack press conference outside of the DC Superior Courthouse.  One individual was pepper sprayed as he attempted to enter the courthouse. At least five other people were sprayed as they attempted to protect the man from being clubbed. Another man was clubbed by police.

National Federation of Community Broadcasters releases statement denouncing the refusal of press credentials to community broadcasters by the IMF. NFCB joins international call for IMF to open its future meetings and events to community media.

117 people who have refused to give their names still held in jail. 19th and E St, several people are injured as they stand in front of a police van.

Judge arranges for a 10:00 am meeting for negotiations between attorneys and demonstrators to gain the demonstrators release.

Approx 20 women released. 150 people await them outside

By dawn, all but two protestors released. One person had lost their armband, and the judge had accidentally not signed the other's release papers.

Granny D (Doris Haddock) and 29 supporters arrested in the Rotunda of the Capitol for giving speeches and hanging banners. Granny D had just completed a walk from California to raise awareness about the effects of corporate money on democracy.
