The book was an alternate history version of the book of Exodus. The chosen people are Korean, in slavery in China, led out by a guy named "Bob Boston". Japan ends up being the chosen land.
The plagues and miracles of Egypt all repeated-- the Yangtze turns to blood, for example, and the Sea of Japan is parted instead of the sea of reeds.
Ultimately, of course, the Diaspora leads to the New World.
