I had a dream this morning that there was to be reconciliation between the Church of England and the Catholic Church in Rome. The pope was officially recognizing the King of England as an equal representative of the word of God, and there was to be a huge ceremony in London and stuff. Except that almost nobody could actually make it. The King (Charles) couldn't make it because of some really stupid reason, I don't remember what, so Prince Andrew was sitting in for him. And the pope's health was failing so he couldn't make it and one of the cardinals was taking his place. And even Tony Blair, prime minister, was going to be really late so, for some reason, I was going to be standing in for him initially.

The ceremony went okay, I guess, considering I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing, when I should stand or sit or kiss rings or whatever. I'm an American, for fuck sake, and I'm not Catholic! I don't know any of this crap! I maintained a modicum of decorum, however. Then Tony Blair finally showed up. I called him Tony at first, then I realized I should probably call him "Mister Prime Minister" and then I thought, fuck it, I owe this guy ZERO respect. So I went back to calling him Tony.

Then I left the ceremony and outside there was this huge crowd of people all lined up-- the pope and king were going to walk out past all of them holding hands in some sort of symbolic thing, and when I came out everyone started taking pictures expecting it to be them. But it was just me. I walked past all of them laughing, because nobody had any idea who I was, but obviously I must be someone important! Apparently none of them knew that neither the King nor the Pope was actually present.

At the end of the long line of people was one of my editors at DC and this film producer I don't even know. I suddenly realized I'd blown a lunch appointment with them. But I sort of helplessly pointed back at the big cathedral, like, "All these world leaders were standing around and someone had to stand in for the Prime Minister..." and they were really understanding.
