There was something really evil in the air last night, as both Jade and I tossed and turned and had terrible dreams all night and basically got no restful sleep at all.
My most frequent nightmare is the "school anxiety" dream, and on this particular night I had a slightly odd and disturbing variation. I dreamt that I had gone back to high school but I only had two classes: English on Monday, Math on Friday. For some reason, the classes were only 10 weeks long, like UCSC's quarter system, and I'd gotten sick on several consecutive weekends such that I kept missing the Monday English class. I was behind several assignments; my grade was looking pretty grim. I went to try to beg the missing assignments off the teacher, hoping she'd let me turn them in late. The teacher was this hideous sort of old sea hag and she kept everything classwork-related in a huge old sea chest that smelled of saltwater and was, in fact, full of seawater as it turned out. All the papers were kept in locked watertight strongboxes which sat under the saltwater; somehow it was so corrosive that only she could reach down in to retrieve it.
I was pretty distraught because, being a sea-hag, she would not let me make up the assignments. Then I began to wonder what the hell was going on, because a sea-hag teacher and only two classes a week made no sense, if I had really gone back to high school. So I began to wake up...
...and then I "remembered" that, in fact, I had not gone back to high school in real life, I had merely gone back to college. That was why I only had classes on two days. And my teachers were not sea hags, they were merely evil horrible people that I hated, and I was just experiencing metaphor. But then, as I continued to slowly wake up, a horrible thought hit me: I'm on vacation in New York City for two weeks and I was, "in fact", missing classes and assignments! In fact, the finals for both classes were going to happen while I was out of town! How could I have been so stupid? How could I have forgotten this?
Then I woke the rest of the way up and realized that I was not going back to school of any sort, and that I was indeed on vacation, and that I was just having a crappy night's sleep.
