23 and 24 November 1999

I had a two part dream... A lot of the details were fuzzy-- especially for the first dream-- even as soon as I woke up each time (the two parts were on successive nights) but most of the rest stayed with me.

The first dream was a movie about how the Nazis sunk the Titanic. Yeah, I bet you didn't know that, huh? The film was a dramatization of the True Story of how and why the Nazis decided the Titanic needed to be sunk in an "accident" about twenty years before they even existed. I think they used time travel. It was definitely a vaguely science-fictiony story, but mostly it was ultra-action-packed and had lots of gunplay and stuff, much more interesting than that piece of shit Cameron film that was so unlike his usual material.* Ahem. Anyway, in the end the Nazis more or less win because the Titanic (and whatever horrible dark secret it was carrying) goes down to a watery grave.

The second dream was the sequel to the first film, and was the True Story of the eventual recovery attempt that was made. In this dream, I was apparently actually a member of the team that had made the recovery attempt, and I was watching the Dramatization and comparing its version of events with what I remembered actually happening. (Evidently, it was because of the "real life" events in the second movie that the world learned the truth about why the Titanic was sunk, which was then shown in the first movie.)

What we did was travel down to the Titanic's wreckage in submersibles, and erect a series of energy shields around each of the two halves of the ship. Then we pumped all the water out. The shields hugged the contour of the hull very closely, and was transparent; from inside the wreckage, you could look out through all the holes in the hull and see the water being held back, dancing merrily. There was a lot more light on the sea floor than there should have been; after a while, in the dream, this occured to me, but then I "remembered" that we had erected this enormous grid of lighting which was suspended above the entire crash site and produced something like filtered sunlight over the entire area.

There was a shielded tunnel that connected the two large shield areas; it had some offshoot tunnels that meandered around the crash site passing near (but not over) some of the more interesting artifacts on the debris field.

So we were basically doing archaeological work-- painstakingly restoring the old ship to something that was basically still the same as its original crashed shape, but which could be used for tourism-- we were washing off brine damage and applying preservatives. It was going to be the world's largest tour, basically-- sort of like two huge Winchester Mystery Houses, with a little maze garden of debris between them.

However, our work was interrupted by two things: One, we began to stumble across evidence of the truth behind Titanic's sinking and the dark secret it had been killed to protect (I don't remember what the dark secret was at all; it may not have been actually revealed in either dream explicitly). And two, a bunch of New Reich Nazis showed up to kill all of us, collapse the shields, and continue protecting the dark secret. Of course.

Most of the dream was a sort of Die Hard kinda thing were I and a few of my fellow crew mates had evaded capture and were loose in the bow section trying to work up a plan; most of the crew had been captured and was being held hostage in the aft. None of us were combatant types and we didn't have much in the way of weapons.

There was a gun battle out in the meandering shield-tunnel maze across the debris field; we could see each other through the water, in separate tunnels, and as we fired at each other the bullets would pass through the energy shield into water and slow down (in a special effect lifted, of course, directly from The Matrix)-- when they reached the far side of the water and emerged back into air, they would return to full speed. The targets were not always fast enough to dodge this, somehow-- despite having several seconds to watch a bullet approach them torpedo-like, two or three of the Nazi mooks went down in this fight. Not very sound physics, but it made for great cinema. I remember watching the Dramatization and shaking my head at how many mistakes they had made in representing what happened, but none of the mistakes were errors of physics or anything. The slo-mo gun-fight really worked that way.

I also remember at some point that we were going to break into the aft section to free the hostages, but we couldn't do it by entering through the shielded tunnel-- the Nazis were watching that, obviously (I think we tried doing so and that's how we got into the gunfight). So we were going to sneak in by SCUBA-ing around the edge of the debris field and entering the aft through one of the hull cracks (the energy shield would totally allow anything but water to pass through it, so we could just slip in).

Ah ha! But what about the deep water pressure, you ask. I remembered that the pressure was an issue, but we had a solution-- "industrial strength" earplugs. Yep. Okay, with the terrible water pressure problem (ahem) solved, we only had one other thing to worry about-- the New Reich Nazis had some sort of James Bond like submersible scouts patrolling around, and they might spot us as we SCUBA'd to the aft section.

We were coming up with a brilliant plan to deal with them when I woke up. I was really saddened; it had been a really fun dream.

* I actually really liked Cameron's Titanic.
