There was a re-release of The Phantom Menace with 20 extra minutes of footage at the beginning which totally changed the whole nature of the film. In the new footage, it turns out that young Obi-Wan was intercepted by the Sith before he met up with Qui-Gon. They branded him with a tattoo of an upright spear with a red blade and the number "7" entwined around it. They had him brainwashed into secretly serving them. They also already had Anakin in their hands, and he had been given the same brand. The two of them were sent off in a freighter together, and Obi-Wan dropped Anakin off at Tatooine himself, where he was given a cover identity as a "slave boy" and all of that. The whole thing was a trap being laid for the Jedi, with Anakin as the bait which Obi-Wan would eventually lead them to, even as he acted like a good little Jedi apprentice the whole time. And I was thinking, man, this totally changes the fucking film. What the hell are they thinking? I mean, it wasn't that good to begin with, but this just completely makes it into something else. A much grimmer film. I'm surprised I didn't like it better.
