Dreamt I was involved in making comics in the 40's. Comics back then were black and white pamphlets, cheaply copied with construction paper covers, hand-colored (each and every issue) with one or maybe two colors of colored pencil. Content seemed to mostly be of the classic romance comic sort, tragic failed relationships and the like.
