A purity test attempts to gauge how "pure" you are within some realm of
experience by having you answer a list of questions regarding which acts,
etc. associated with the subject you have engaged in.
Generally, for each "yes" answer you lose a purity point.
The result is scaled to tell you what percentage of purity you still retain.
History
Purity tests have existed for ages, originally taking the form of written
lists of questions.
With the advent of the Net, it became popular to distribute them by electronic
means.
Some were modified to be programs or shell scripts which would ask you each
question in turn, and do the calculations for you when you were done.
In 1989, Eric Lechner wrote a program that
would do the same thing using data files that described different purity tests.
He converted various purity tests to this format and made the
package available.

In June 1994 I finally finished a pyrotechnics purity test
that I had begun working on during the same period in which Eric wrote his
program, and decided to make an HTML version of it.
I ended up writing a
program to convert purity
test data files in the Lechner format into HTML forms, and another
program that the output of the first can be sent to to provide the person
taking the test with a score, thus creating the first purity tests on the web.
What's Here
Some of the tests below are from Eric's purity test package, run through the
conversion program described above.
Since I put up the purity test scorer, I have found it being used
for new tests by web authors who found one of the existing tests and changed
the questions to those from a different pool.
I've added some of those tests here.
More recently, I've found a bunch of tests in HTML format, with the
questions given as HTML lists.
This format is also easy to (mostly automatically) convert to a checkbox test,
so I've added a bunch of them here.
Some test authors have created tests specifically to use the scoring
program here, and have submitted them to me.
If you have a new test which uses this scoring system that you would
like to see added, feel free to
point me at it.
Please don't be offended if I decide not to add it.
I've gotten enough requests for additions that I am now only adding those that
are particularly interesting and different.
As you can see below, there are already plenty of sex tests.
You can use this web interface to create a purity
test that uses The Armory's automatic scoring
system.

Important Note!
I get a fair amount of mail regarding these purity tests,
with some correspondents telling me that they enjoyed the tests, and others
taking me to task for the contents of one or the other of the tests.
The latter seem to have missed the information above, namely, that I only
created one of the tests below (the pyro test).
If you wish to comment on the appropriateness,
tastelessness, etc. of my making these tests available in this format, feel
free, though as a long-time chunkstyler I will generally take tasteless
to be a compliment.
However, please at least demonstrate that you are aware of the above
distinction.
If you wish to take issue with the contents of a test, you would be best off
discussing it with the author, if that information is available.
Whatever information I have on the authorship of each test is contained in the
text of the test.

Final Note
If you find that a purity test ends abruptly (before the actual end of the
test), it's probably because the HTTP transfer failed or your browser is not
capable of dealing with the huge number of checkboxes that the larger tests
have.
You may wish to scroll to the bottom of a test to make sure it's all there
before filling it out, since it's annoying to find out 90% of the way through a
1500-question test that you can't submit it.

"Omnisexual" marks tests that appear to have been meant by their authors
to be independent of sexual orientation.
