A woman (Grace Zabriskie) says that she is tired all the time,
can't sleep at night, is terribly thirsty no matter how much water she
drinks; asks what Joe thinks.
1:00: Joe, a hitman, tells us about his victims, how he kills
them, how he insinuates himself into their and their families' lives,
how he's a good family man, friend, and citizen.
7:00: Lex (Larry Block), his boss, calls to discuss Joe's
latest hit: Raymond, a colleague who wants to get out of the business.
8:40: An annoying woman down the hall (they're in the hotel
Mayflower), comes by to bum a cigarette and kvetch.
9:30: She and a man (Ryan Cutrona) (he isn't introduced) talk
about jazz musicians and the 'Modern Joyce Quartet'.
	10:40: The woman scat-sings to a piano.
11:40: Joe confronts Raymond (Ryan Cutrona); Raymond wants Joe
to help. Joe recalls their meeting last week at O'Doul's. Joe
coaches him on his acting: he's not tragic enough.
19:10: Joe laments the depths to which we must go to survive.
Lex chimes in, then Larry starts talking about his life. Larry plays
a patient at Morchand center for clinical competence,
https://icahn.mssm.edu/education/medical/clinical/morchand/actors .
(This may be the first time Larry appears as himself.)
24:50: Raymond and the woman are gone; Joe's looking at the
junk he sees in the street from his window. He wonders why anyone
thinks s/he has a right to life.

On-air credits are: 'It was created in collaboration with
David Rapkin; the story editor was Farley Ziegler, recorded and mixed
by Jerry Summers; the performers were Joe Frank, Grace Zabriskie,
Larry Block, and Ryan Cutrona - special thanks to Jennifer Ferro.'

The woman in the first segment has symptoms of diabetes; the
woman in the hotel complains of diabetes; Larry plays a patient with
diabetes at his hospital job.

Joe tells of his Antarctic cruise, taken to get away from the
difficulties of his life in LA, on an old cruise ship. A drunk young
couple, Paul and Nancy, introduce themselves at the bar on the first
night. They're unhappy with the cruise. Nancy flirts with Joe. Paul
offers Joe their key. Joe keeps his distance. They set out from
Ushuaia. (A real Antarctic port used by cruise ships
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ushuaia )
The crew is Greek, the captain Constantine Kyriakos; Nicos,
the steward, runs everything not nautical.
Paul, a junk-bond millionaire, tells of his travel adventures,
disparages the other passengers, brags of his torrid sex with Nancy.
With Paul sick in harsh weather, Nancy talks to Joe alone,
brags about her sexual adventures. She wants to have sex with the
captain, does that night.
Nicos falls sick; Nancy and the captain's affair gets more
exotic.
When the weather clears after a week, it turns out that Paul
and Nicos both have appendicitis. A retired physician says Paul's
symptoms are dire, need to be operated on before they can get to
shore, but won't do it himself. Nicos volunteers, relying on his
military service as a medic, using his model ship-building tools. The
power goes out during the operation.
They land at Deception Island, site of a US weather station,
the next night. (I find no evidence of US station on Deception
Island, nor all the stuff that's in Joe's story.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deception_Island), where Paul and Nicos
are treated and Nancy goes off with a navy diver. The passengers tour
a penguin rookery.
Nicos dies. Nancy stays with the diver. The others return on
another ship.
20:00: Joe (back home) laments the injustices of life.
20:50: Joe's cold despite a blazing fire and heavy clothes.
He looks in the mirror, sees snow on himself, signs of illness,
considers operating on himself with kitchen utensils (including fried
onion for his liver.)

Joe goes fishing with his uncle Fred (Ryan Cutrona?) a week
after Fred's retirement. A fish pulls Fred into the water; his body
is never recovered. This makes Joe reconsider his values.
1:50: The ma?tre d' of 'Le Dome' shows Joe and his date to the
employees' wash room, seats them on toilets; when Joe complains he
smashes the water pitcher on the floor and demands to be taken to his
mother. On his way home, Joe reads a story in the paper of a surgeon
taking out people's internal organs, replacing them with electronic
gear. At home, on the TV newscast, the anchorman shows palms with
bleeding stigmata, the anchorwoman rips off her blouse, holds her
breast, gyrates; they report on a corporate takeover of the Vatican.
2:50: Joe switches to another channel; its news reports of
animals, their habitat destroyed, have moved into cities and taken up
crime. A female reporter in the field talks to people who have been
attacked by animals.
4:40: Joe calls up the woman in an apartment across the
courtyard who is nude, upsetting Joe. First he wants her to put
clothes on, then to meet him, to have a relationship with him. She's
unsympathetic to Joe's distress and uninterested in meeting him.
8:50: Joe sees prostitute sheep in the street, a beggar fox.
A nun from the Order of Infinite Charity in a limousine lures Joe off
the street, forces herself on him. They drop him off in the suburbs.
11:00: A marching band and float from the homecoming parade of
Swinburne Agriculture and Mining College drives by. The woman on the
float asks Joe the way to the college: they've been lost for more than
40 years.
13:20: Joe thinks of going into the map-making business; he
wants to create life-size maps because they'd be more accurate. Then
he laments how formulae, analogous to maps, constrict our lives. An
old man stops; he's the fianc?e of the woman on the float, he's
looking for her. She had given him a bouquet made of 2 sticks and a
rock, which he still has.
17:20: Joe wonders why there is so much suffering and other
philosophical matters.
18:20: Joe calls the woman across the courtyard again.
Because she persists in refusing him, he shoots her.
20:10: Joe talks about the narrow border between order and
chaos, wonders if we will save ourselves from ourselves.
21:00: Joe is now in the country (no mention of how he got
there); feels great to be in nature.
23:40: Uncle Fred, happy to be about to retire, invites Joe to
go fishing with him.
24:20: The nun tells Joe that this is what angels would do if
they had bodies, tells Joe not to judge her.
25:00: The woman on the float calls to report a missing
person, herself.

I discovered Jon Hassell's music through listening to Joe Frank's programs.
After reading Hassell's obituary this morning, I listened again to "Power
Spot." It's a fine album.
