Larry Block describes a movie thusly in Joe Frank's 'Evening
sky', about 18 minutes in:

'this French film that we could never remember the name of but
the story of it is fascinating because it's about a guy who is very
much in love with his wife. They have a wonderful relationship
typical for ordinary Parisians living in the suburbs and he meets
another woman on a train and they become friends and ultimately have
an affair and he discovers much to his amazement that he loves his
wife as much as ever and also enjoys this other woman and it strikes
him that he's capable of this enormous amount of love, that he can be
in love with 2 people at the same time and it's so amazing to him that
he doesn't want to keep it secret from his wife so he tells his wife
that he loves her dearly and also was attracted to this other woman
and has been having an affair with her but he doesn't want it to be a
hidden thing because it strikes him that his nature and maybe human
nature is the possibility that one can have more than one love at the
same time and this drives her insane and she ultimately kills
herself.'
