I sent email to them asking what up, but no response from the station (not whining about that, just saying...) I'm a pretty flexible and undemanding person but I just can't deal with the official JF website with its confusing subscription programs, inconsistencies, and what not. You hit the nail on the head BM. There really is no shortage of willing fans and volunteers that would jump through hoops to do Joe's bidding. So in that sense there is no excuse. My humble opinion, is that the web has never been a priority or of great interest to Mr. Frank. I think he is "old school" as far as his media format interests go, and when his health took a dive, the web was the first to go, as it was the last to arrive when he was more or less well. He probably had to prioritize, due to the limitations an illness will put on your energy and the web got the axe for now. We might even be living in the age of a Joe-less world so to speak, even if he lives another 20 years. I suppose sometimes it is all we can do just to live and give our energy to those closest to us, and even the passion to create great art (as Joe can do) must take a back seat to the basics. The man doesn't talk about it, but he's not rolling in dough. I think times are pretty tough at Chez Joe right now. I don't mean to imply he is eating only ramen noodles and watching off-the-air TV but he's not shppoing for a new 'Benz either. His health care costs are huge and I don't think he has blue cross..... So I think it would be in Joe's best interest if the web site continued to draw subscribers. There was a comment abou the site having confusion subscription levels and being hard to use, and, yeah, it is one of the most complex I've seen.... many subscription tiers and this whole pre-queueing mechanism can be a trifle confusing. I usually have to dig around for a while before I find the page where I can select shows to listen to. I understand the pre-queue mechanism saves a ton in terms of online storage and possibly streaming charges. Running a stream server or leasing capacity tends to be very costly. I wonder if Joe should re-evaluate Audible.com? I think a lot of people get podcasts and content from there. Part of the issue may be, Joe wants to stream something to you but would rather not give you something you can download and keep and copy for your pals... (even though one could easily use a stream-ripper to save the Windows Media files that Joefrank.Com streams.) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Reading comments from folks who clearly are jonesing for some Joe made me feel like I should chime in by introducing myself and mentioning that I host a weekly show on WMUA in Amherst, Mass., on which I air Joe Frank. It's a bit of an odd circumstance. Joe is not n the WMUA schedule, but I stick an hour-long Joe show right in the middle of my two-hour show each week. My show is called "Strange Bedfellows," and it airs at 11:30 p.m. on Fridays, with Joe starting at midnight. WMUA doesn't archive shows, but you can stream it live at wmua.org. Or, if you're in western Mass., you can tune in at 91.1 FM. In case you're wondering what the hour of "Strange Bedfellows" that's sandwiched around Joe might sound like, it's pretty different each week, but generally speaking, I like to mix together things that don't usually get lumped together. A Mozart aria followed by some Woody Allen standup. Monk, then Marley. A Jean Shepherd show from 1975. We have fun. Check it out sometime. And if you know folks in western Mass., please spread the word. I think there's a significant audience for Joe's work here in the Happy Valley, but it's a task getting the word out. It's well worth the effort, though. Joe Frank is truly ingenius. Peace all, Jeff -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Kind of a webmasters' blog? Like, "weather out here is colder than usual, the staff has been calling in sick." or "New DAT machine arrived today, nobody knows how to work it." Or, "Have a listen to the CD named XYZ by Band_Band we think it's interesting." - maybe a playlist- top ten CDs in heavy rotation around Joe HQ at the moment (see . Or like "Anybody ever hear of the film maker Sw?mm Bl?dders? Check him out!" This sort of activity, in the absence of new Joe material, could help maintain some interest and member momentum. Or maybe more Joe-oriented stuff like, "Joe is feeling better this week" or "Joe got a dog." might be good but we don't really want a "fan" site which, like, invades his space. Message-ID: <245.474f76b.30e52cdd@aol.com> Geez I missed that WBEZ on there, and I didn't mean any criticism I just wanted to note that I thought Joe was on more places / more times.... don't mind me, I haven't had enough coffee today ;-) The list does give a good set of options for free listening, and it's great to know about it, thanks for letting us know. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm looking forward to that, if that's the right way to put it. I've been a full member (or whatever it's called) for a while and intend to keep it up even if there isn't new content. I see it as supporting interesting radio, which there's not nearly enough of in this world. Our membership helps to keep Joe's programs online -- including the freebies that are on the site for those who don't pay. I'm happy to help support that. That said, I do actually use my membership -- now and then I want to listen to an old show, and with my membership I can go in and listen to whatever I want, whenever I want. __________________________________________ Yahoo!
