So, they open a second show the very same night at 1030pm... which sold out again! I was able to grab a couple of tix for the 1030pm show, but now am in a quagmire with flights from Seattle to LA being a hefty $300+. Trust me, if I can get out of work requirements, I'd greyhound it! SO, I would like to sell it at face value, $20/tix. Please email me directly. It seems that the radio-verite style had a little too much verite for some who listened, and perhaps even for the hostess of the segment, who rather abruptly ended the encounter. Ofcourse, the whole verbal altercation - in which Larry Block accused Joe Frank of owing him back pay and of being impossible to reach by any means short of calling in to a pledge drive - was planned and had been recently used as the basis for an improvosation for a pledge drive for KPFA in San Francisco. The FMU hostess apparently thought that Larry Block was a dangerous character and that Joe had to be shielded. This absurd action on her part has contributed to the growing perception that Larry Block has gone over the edge, which I can assure any loyal fans is not the case. I speak with some authority, I think, since I am, in fact, Larry Block. All the best from the edge. Saw kevin thomas of the la times line up as well. lots of stoned intellectuals (my favorite variety). Sandra went on first. her show was funny. she is very animated and had a good time tearing a nameless ruth seymore apart. she compared herself to rodney king rather than lenny bruce. she pointed out that saying the FFFFFFFFFFF word has gotten her more attention than her clever writing style. She had tons of inside jokes. her show was really good, but I was waiting for the main dish. the yummy Joe. before joe went on, smoked was pumped into the theater. my boyfriend leaned over and whispered, "ahhh, canned l.a. air." it smelled just as good. then the lovely ambient music started up. Joe walked over to his podium and was lit from below with blue neon. it was really beautiful and my pot high was settling in perfectly. Joe was telling the tale of his own ruth experience. I hadn't realized that he had been fired from kcrw. Though Sandra's anger was engaging, sort of patty smithesque, it was too much ranting for me. I can do that on my own. Joe was sexy. I mean, he was really sexy. Joe whispers in your ear and you are on your own. people were silently doubled over, giggling to themselves. when he giggled over his jokes, his face was so dang cute, and the giggling so infectuous, that I wasn't sure if his came first or ours. We were all privately giggling together. his set was dark, so you still had the intamacy with Joe that each and every one of us so desired. I know there is more. I wouldn't dare even begin to quote him or recite his show. So, I am sure that it will be downloadable to computer near you. I feel real lucky to have scored the tickets. Actually got the opportunity to meeting him after the show ! Watching him crack up, during some of the more explicit Ruth segments. was a treat. But for those of us who have not seen Joe live. His show is very much like the radio show. Very well scripted, timed, with the now famous background music. The audience was mesmerized, laughing - crying - feeling the horror. Joe may have come on stage depressed (his words), but I think everyone there walked away - more saddened and awake with the knowledge of a life Joe put in front of us. The story of the why's and what happened between him and KCRW 's Ruth Seymour turned out to be not what Joe talked about as much as what his innermost feeling were about having another human holding a life in their hands, wielding power at a whim, without compassion, and what that sort of thing does to the human soul. At least thats what I walked away from the show with. I would love to hear other comments.. His set will be roughly 25 to 30 minutes. What he will do is anybody's guess, but we've heard something about a possible Joe Frank film projected on a screen and a live dancer on stage and Joe performing a monologue. Joe on WBEZ Chicago Message-ID: <1083277780.409181d4b71fb@augustus.dnsback.com> Joe's show will be airing weekly on WBEZ Chicago starting May 16th - Sunday mornings at 11:00 following Harry Shearer's Le Show: Here's the line-up: "Dreamland" 5/16 "OJ Chronicles" 5/23 "Soul Mate" 5/30 "Eye in the Sky" 6/6 "Escape from Paradise" 6/13 "Talk to Me" 6/20 Yes, they are previously produced shows, but the support and exposure Joe's received in the last year is beginning to pay off. He's working on new material, has a few live performances lined up (and we're working on quite a few more)... all with original material. Thanks to his fans! As a Chicagoan I am really glad to see this. I've had several email discussions with Torey Malatia (who runs WBEZ ) where I've tried to persuade him to air more Joe. I always had a sense that Torey was sympathetic to Joe's work, and I'm glad to see they put Joe back on. This EMAIL from JoeFrank.Com makes a mistake I think. Harry Shearer's Le Show is on at 11 PM not AM. At midnight they've got Ken Nordine's WORD JAZZ and it's a natural spot to put Joe Frank in at 11 PM between Le Show and Word Jazz. Let's hope that this becomes permanent and in fact that the relationship deepens- I hope WBEZ can encourage, or even sponsor, Joe to do new material. Bill Milosz Chicago PS Check WBEZ's schedule, http://www.wbez.com/schedule/schedule.asp And Joe fans might enjoy listening to some of Ken Nordine's WORD JAZZ things- not the same thing but interesting in their own way. I like the silly humor that is sometimes present and I like the sound design. http://www.wordjazz.com/ <= includes streaming stuff. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
