I live in that area, and have been teaching fencing for some years now. I would not be averse to organizing such a practice. Somehow or other though, I have not been able to contact those who are expressing the interest. So, if you are someone who is interested in fencing in that area, or know someone who is, please have the interested parties contact me directly (I don't always check the lists regularly) and we will see what we can put together. Once again, there will be a Sunday morning Artisan's Display at Beltane, in and around the Arts and Sciences pavilion. This is not a competition; this is a chance for you to display your work (and works in progress) and to schmooze with other artisans of the kingdom. Artisans of all levels are welcome to participate. Bring your projects and your questions, show off your work and take the opportunity to see what others are working on. We should also have space available for those who would like to demonstrate their arts -- in the past, we have had glass-bead makers and fabric painters and cookers-over-fire -- so if you have a setup that's event-friendly, please consider giving us a demonstration of your craft! If you leave items for a static display, please be sure they are marked with your name and contact info. Documentation is not required, but is recommended. A handout with a description of your item, and how you made it is always appreciated by the people who stop by for a look. Notepads and pencils will be provided to exchange contact information or leave questions or comments, and personal tokens are encouraged. They don't need to be fancy -- beads or tassels or baggies of cookies are all equally appreciated. The display area will be open at 9:00 a.m. for setup, and the display will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon. If you'd like to display your works, please contact me and let me know how much space you think you'll need, and if you have any special requirements. You may want to consider how to protect your work if it is especially fragile. Please forward this message to other lists as appropriate. We are in Morgan Hill at the home of Adriana and Marco. Dance Practices in May will have a change for that month only. We will meet the first and second Thursdays, May 4th and 11th, and not on the 3rd Thursday. This is due to scheduling conflicts. On the 3rd Thursday a group of us will be attending the opening night of "Grease", the production being performed by the students of our host Marco. In his regular life he is a drama and fine arts instructor at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill, the site for the Performance Art Symposium on May 27. http://www.westkingdom.org/calendar/PerformingArtsSymposium.php This is a beginning level dance practice. No previous experience is necessary. The featured dances for May will be: Boateman, Petit Rhiens, and Stingo. Practice starts at 7:30 pm and runs to approximately 9:00 pm. We then break for root beer floats and snacks. In courtesy to those who must go to work/school early the next day (including our hosts), we'd like to try to be prompt starting and stopping. We suggest street clothes, rather than garb, for practice. Clean, soft-soled shoes are a bonus. His Majesty Radnor has defined a "court" to be just like a previous court, except that it will take no longer than 90 minutes. While this may mean that there are more frequent courts, each individual court will be of a manageable length. This seemed a very sensible idea to the small percentage of the populace who were actually at court. His Majesty also passed out tokens to the populace at court to deliver to those who normally camp farther out and keep more to themselves. These tokens are "the King's Cup", and the message to go with the tokens is that His Majesty has at the Royal Pavillion drinks -- both of spirits and those merely for the quenching of thirst -- and if a person arrives with a token he or she need only say that they have the King's Cup, and His Majesty will provide them with drink. (I suspect that He wouldn't turn someone away who didn't have a Cup, either, but I don't know for sure.) Another highlight of the event for me was Duke Uther's speech. Radnor had approached Their Majesties Fabian and Eliska, and Duke Uther stood to remind the populace not only who Her Grace Ysabeau was (as if we would forget), but also to tell of his experiences in their household and what grace she brought to it. It was a very moving speech, with humor and sentiment and love for the two of them. I cried. Someone else has mentioned that the composer of "Fair Mistlands" sang, with the West Kingdom Choir, a new arrangement for Flieg. It was very nice. Lots of people cried. Prince Rorik announced that Ed Levin Park (a huge county park right next to Milpitas) has agreed to an arrangement where they will let us camp, and also do improvements in the park to our wishes. We will need to put in some sweat equity (the first work party is this next Saturday -- talk to Duncan about volunteering), but will get money on our account for the work down. In this way, we might get free events. There was more, but I don't remember any details, and I hope I haven't made any major mistakes. Bryn was knighted. I am very, very disappointed that I missed the ceremony, so I can't give you any details, but she looked wonderful in her white belt. The salon was superb. The dresses (oh, the dresses) of the ladies made me very jealous. I'm getting too tired to finish this, but I hope someone else will comment on what all went on. I would like to take this opportunity to send out a note for those in the West Kingdom who purchase fabric over the net. I recently purchased about 65 yards of Crushed Velvet to make garb for my April wedding. There were two rolls, Blue and Gold. About 1/2 way thru the bolt, 2 1/2 yards of each desintegrated. Which for those of you who sew can be detrimental. Anyway, I called the company in L.A., (DisctinctiveFabric.com) on Tuesday, and was told that since there was a 20 day return policy which is posted on their website, the only thing that could be done for me was that I could purchase 5 yards of material at half off the cost and shipping and handling. Need I say that did not impress me, nor make me happy. The material I purchased was not very heavy and from what I understand from my friends, hard to work with. I would like to send out this warning, if you do business with this company you may get treated badly. I for one will never do business with them again. By now, you have probably all heard that Siobh?n n? hEodhusa (mka Leigh Ann Hussey) was killed in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday evening. She wrote "To the West" and "Black Swan Rising", among many songs, and was the first Bard of the West and the second Bard of the Mists. She was a wonderful singer and violinist. This Saturday is Mists Investiture. Their Highnesses Roric and Peza have asked the West Kingdom Choir to lead the populace in singing "To the West" during their final court. WKC will supply the words and scores to any who want them. Two scores will be available: the simple melody-and-words score from the Elf Hill Times songbook, and the full 5-part arrangement by Alessandro (which, by the way, was blessed by Siobh?n). WKC will also be leading the populace in singing "To the West" at June Crown. I have upload a full set of practice files to our Yahoo group, as well as to sca-west and SCA-Xton. I urge any of you who can to come and sing Saturday at Investiture. Just learn the melody if you want. Don't worry at all about how well you know it. This is not a performance -- it is a wake. Everyone there is going to be singing, and most of us will probably be crying. Hell, I'm crying just writing this, and I never even met the Lady. And by the way, if any of you are wondering, as I did, "Siobh?n n? hEodhusa" is pronounced "shah-VAHN nah HAY-sa". As I have often said, the French never learned to spell, but the Gaels never even grasped the concept. Wonderful teachers from all around the area are offering a fabulous array of classes. The hardest part of the day will be deciding which of the myriad classes to attend. If the current discussions about bardic circles have given you an interest in learning period songs, this is a good event to explore that. If the dancing at Investiture made you long for a chance to try it. Or to learn more dances. Or just watch other people trying to learn new dances, this is a good event to explore that. If you play an instrument and want to meet others that play, or to learn some more about how to play your musical instrument with period music, this is a good event to explore that. If you've watched the Golden Stag Players or Bella Luna or other groups who perform plays and skits, and have a curiosity about learning more about the dramatic arts in our period, this is a good event to explore that. And if you want an evening of fellowship as we all share that which we have learned through the day. An evening of festivity as we perform for one another. And an evening of fun, as we participate in making an entertainment together, then this is THE event for you. Class details and directions are in the Page and on the West Kingdom Website http://www.westkingdom.org/calendar/PerformingArtsSymposium.php or contact Na'arah bat Avraham : the_momstable at rocketmail dot com Bring a sack lunch for yourself and a dinner potluck finger food to share. Please note: We have added an additional class to the schedule Vocal Music Track 10:30-11:45 - Many Voices, One Song: A Discussion of Bardic Circles: Branwen Crycctheng This is a combination of discussion and singing. What do you want from a bardic circle? What worries do you have? What can make a bardic circle work? Well, that would be the tweak by TRM I had in mind. ;p It's probably good, though, that you're being the stick to my carrot. :> If I recall correctly, the usual Make-A-Wish thing is the "Princess/Knight/Whatever for a Day" sort of schtick; that's the sort of thing which I was thinking could be adapted *if* the SCA decides to do something. Frankly, I'm not necessarily comfortable with the idea in general - if they "know of" the SCA but have chosen not to play with us, I'm not keen on even nominally (by which I literally mean 'in name only') bestowing one of our highest honors. I'll play along if that's the decision, but I think they'd be better off asking one of the Ren Faires, which is where they actually played. (It'd probably mean more, too!) My "vote", on further consideration, is to pass this request up the chain with the same alacrity with which I'd dispose of a nervous skunk. -Yasamin From mct at warriorprincess.com Fri May 26 23:28:00 2006 From: mct at warriorprincess.com (Michelle Chapman-Thurber) Date: Fri May 26 23:22:19 2006 Subject: [Darkwood-SCA] Fwd: personal request In-Reply-To: References: <6.2.3.4.2.20060526155011.02cd1b98@mail.warriorprincess.com> <000f01c6812e$251fd640$0200a8c0@darkwood> Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20060526232615.02d49d30@mail.warriorprincess.com> You all have excellent points. The Darkwood Choir will meet for practice Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Christophe's place. Bring your favorite tea. ******************************************** I would like to take a moment to invite all of you to come sing with us in the Darkwood Choir. We truly welcome singers at any level, from novice to expert -- this is a place for all of us to learn and grow. Don't worry if you don't know how to read music. We need more of all voice types -- soprano, alto, tenor, and bass -- but we especially need more men! I'm a choir master, not a harem master. ;-) Right now is an especially good time to give us a try, since we have just wound up a project and are ready to go on to new things. The more people we have, the more interesting are the things we can sing. The goals of the Darkwood Choir are: * To nurture a love of Period music and choral singing, and to provide a place for those of who play with Darkwood to learn and indulge these joys. We also sing some non-Period music by Darkwood composers. * To perform, from time to time, at Darkwood events. We also, on occasion, combine forces with the West Kingdom Choir. * To make our campfires more fun by singing stuff we know, leading the populace in song. etc. ******************************************** This week's practice: Time: Tuesday, May 30, 7:30 - 9:30 pm Place: 582 Ingman Ct., Marina Directions: IF YOU ARE COMING FROM SALINAS: Take Blanco Rd. until it ends. Turn right onto Reservation Rd. At the second stoplight, turn left onto Imjin Rd. At the second stoplight (by Ord Market) turn RIGHT onto Abrams. Take the first left onto Brostrom. Take the third right onto Ingman. OTHERWISE: Make your way to Highway 1. Just south of Marina is the 12th Street exit: take that in the direction away from the water. At the 4th stoplight (Ord Market will be on the right), turn LEFT onto Abrams. Take the first left onto Brostrom. Take the third right onto Ingman. Christophe is in the first building on the right, upstairs to the left. Parking is on the street. There's a small lot on the other side of Brostrom, too. If you get lost, you can call Christophe at 831-883-4248 or 408-907-2728. See you there. John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Those nasty peasants and just how revolting they are. And Poachers to boot. Poaching food off the Baron's land here in Darkwood. Well, just between you and me, one thing that always goes over well is to remember to bring a side dish when you go to The Poachers Feast. Yes, those Poachers over in Caer Darth especially are good at making sure there is meat on the table. But do they remember fun and healthy side dishes? Nay! So, if you plan on coming to the Poachers Feast at Highland Park in Ben Lomond, you might want to consider the following list: A-H - Salad/Vegetable I-Q - Breads/Drinks(?) R-Z - Desserts And I suppose you would like to know things like where Highland Park is too, don't you? Well fortunately the cartographers have made a map available at: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Highland+Park&near=Ben+Lomond+CA&sll=37.31666,-122.084198&sspn=0.74923,0.997009&cid=37086183,-122083869,2892983101916405348&iwstate1=form:to Or you can tell your own cartographer to find: 8500 Highway 9 Ben Lomond, CA The grove you will be able to find the poachers at is located just down the hill behind the game field and senior center. Be there at 11:00 am but be sure to clear out by 7:00 before the Baron's men come through looking for those criminal poachers.
