Subject: [Darkwood-SCA] No Darkwood Dance Practice - 2 weeks
Message-ID: <20060102152311.29179.qmail@web51412.mail.yahoo.com>

Greetings all,

This is a reminder. There is no Darkwood Dance practice for this week -
1st Thursday, January 5, 2006. Darkwood Dance in Morgan Hill will
resume on the 3rd Thursday, January 19, 2006 at the home of Marco and
Adriana.

Also, the 2nd and 4th Thursday practice in Santa Cruz has been
suspended during the winter months. Stay posted for more updates when
resumption of practices will begin.

However, do not despair that there is not enough dancing this month.
There are 3 events that have dancing scheduled in our local area. 12th
Night, this coming Saturday, has the Duchesses Ball in the evening -
January 7th, 2006

http://www.westkingdom.org/calendar/12th_night2006.php

The Crosston Ball is scheduled for Saturday, January 21st. Classes
during the day, and dancing at the ball in the evening.

http://www.halimal.com/crosston/Pages/danceball06.htm

And Hawksfeast in Tres Pinos has rumors of dancing after the feast.

Yours in service,

Na'arah
The Minion

Greetings, Darkwood!

Tired of doing all your 16th c. Germanic lands costume research while walking
around at events?
Ever wanted to do your own research on what Landsknecht or Kampfrau really
wore?
Did you ever wonder if there was anybody else in 16th c. Germany who wasn't a
Landsknecht or a Kampfrau?

Come find out more about the REAL 16th century Germanic lands and what people
actually wore.

    Topics we'll cover:
  - Timeline of fashions in German clothing 1480-1590. What were the large
fashion trends and the relevant social/political events?
  - Primary, secondary and tertiray period 16th century Germanic research
sources for clothing, food and everyday life.
    - Did they really dress like that? How to look at a
painting/drawing/engraving and figure out is it allegorical or a real person.
  - How is that garment constructed? I'll show you how to find the clues in the
painting/drawing/engraving and using the other resources we have (tailor's
books, extant garments), to figure out how the clothing was made (seam lines,
construction methods).
  - What's that thing on their head? Hats and headcoverings for men and women;
types, documentation and construction theories.

My resolution for 2006 is to put together a series of A&S workshops in the
barony, so please let me know if there is a class you would like to have set
up. To start things off, though, Lady Sophia Kress will be teaching a class on
German costume on January 16 in Pacific Grove. There are only ten spaces
available, so obviously first chance goes to residents of the barony. If there
are any spaces left, I will make them available to people outside of Darkwood,
so please RSVP to me as soon as possible.

The class will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and there is a $5 charge for the handout
packet.

My thanks to Sophia for putting this class together, and I look forward to
seeing many of you there!

Hello everybody!

Well, I got my dates all mixed up (blame the pre-12th Night frenzy) and put the
class on the wrong weekend. It's scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 22. Those of you
who've already sent me RSVPs, I'll keep you on the list unless you tell me you

Good lords and ladies of fair Darkwood

You are all henceforth invited to attend the after-event 12th Night party of
Brigit and Rhyli in their room at the hotel. As we don't yet know which
room we will be in, look for me as I amble about the hotel during the day or
look for signs posted around the feasting hall and other places. Or just ask
around.

Donations of snacks and drinks are appreciated. Please, no one under 18
(and if you are a minor, please don't even TRY to drink...). Festivities
begin around 10pm and last until I throw everyone out.

Happy Dancing,

Greetings all,

I know it's short notice, but I have already spoken with many of you.
Friday Night is Lucius's Birthday. If you are planning to attend Friday
night, or are close by the area and want to join us Friday night. We are
planning to meet in the Lobby around 7 pm to see about dinner and dancing.
Gifts are not required. The gift of your presence is gift enough.

I will have my cell phone with me if you don't find us, or can't join us
until later. 831-262-9668.

Thanks,

Anne

Hi all,

The event copy for White Shield is now on the Darkwood site. Branch
web ministers, to link directly to the web event copy, the link is thus:

http://www.baronyofdarkwood.org/events.html#ws

Included in the event copy on the page is a link to download the menu.

Also, I'm in the midst of bringing the site up to standard to comply
with Kingdom and Corporate web policies. Expect small tweaks here
and there. Note the new Disclaimer on the right hand sidebar, in
accordance with this.

Please forgive the late notice. This month's Darkwood meeting is Monday,
January 9, at 7:00 pm at the Elkhorn Yacht Club. Dinner service
permitting, we will start as close to 7:00 as possible.

If you have anything you'd like to add to the agenda, please let me know
by 3:30 on Monday.

Directions: From the SOUTH: Go north on Hwy. 1 to Moss Landing. Cross over
the bridge. Go about 1/10 of a mile, and the entrance to the Yacht Club is
on your left. If you get to the curve in the road, you've gone too far.

>From the NORTH: Go south on Hwy. 1 past Watsonville. The road narrows down
to 2 lanes. When you pass the Beacon station (the only gas station on this
stretch of road), go about another mile, and the entrance to the Yacht
Club is on your right. If you get to the bridge, you just passed it. We
are allowed to use the parking spaces marked "Yacht Club members only".

Message-ID: <20060109230642.50360.qmail@web51412.mail.yahoo.com>

The Crosston Dance Ball will be on the 21st of January, two
weeks from now. Please refer to
http://www.halimal.com/crosston/Pages/danceball06.htm for
details and directions. There are also links to the dance list
and the menu.

Dance class will start at about 7pm and go to 9pm. This week and
next we will be focusing on dances that will be done at the
Dance Ball.

If you would like to be added to or removed from this weekly
email reminder for dance, please send an email to Crystal of the
Westermark, xtalrock at yahoo dot com.

Dance practice this week is in Menlo Park.
Directions:
Take 101 south to the Willow Road exit in Menlo Park. Go west on
Willow Road, away from the Dumbarton Bridge. Go past the first
light to turn left on Durham. Go to the first stop sign and turn
right onto Laurel. Turn left onto O'Keefe. Go one block and park
anywhere legal on O'Keefe or Central Ave. It's a one-story
house, with medium sized redwood trees flanking the yard, in the
middle of the block. 116 O'Keefe St, Menlo Park, CA.
Yahoo!Maps will also give you accurate directions, but will tell
you to turn left from Willow onto O'Keefe at an uncontrolled,
unmarked interesction (at the 76 Gas Station). I don't recommend
it at high traffic times.
Dance usually starts at 7pm. About 9pm we often go to a local
restaurant for dinner or ice-cream.

see you there!

Message-ID: <43C2FF82.5080204@pacbell.net>

Hi, all. There will be no official Darkwood Choir practice for
tomorrow, Jan. 10. As some of you know, I am recovering from this
blasted cold I caught over the holidays. I am much better, practically
well in fact, but I have just gotten rid of a last, lingering cough, and
am going out of my way to avoid doing things that might well set it off
again -- such as laughing and singing. I also feel that it is a good
idea to wait one more week before I resume driving around in the cold
night air on the freeway going to and from choir practice.

As you know, we will be singing "Wedding Song (There is Love)" (by Noel
Paul Stookey of "Peter, Paul, and Mary") at Frances and Badger's wedding
this spring. I have just gotten hold of a score of it for soloist and
piano, and am in the process of writing a choral arrangement for us.
Hopefully, I will have it completed next Tuesday to the point that we
can look it over and perhaps begin rehearsing it.

I hope you all had enjoyable holidays and 12th Night. See you soon.

John

Message-ID: <006901c6179c$d8f15730$0b0aa8c0@MTKC20>

Greetings everyone!

This year, at White Shield, the Barony of Darkwood will hold not one, but TWO auctions to raise money for baronial events.

Starting at 12 Noon, our Annual Silent Auction will run until 8:30 p.m. Need ideas for contributions to the auction? Anything you think could be used by another SCA person for an SCA event or activity. Garb, feast gear, camping gear, armor, sewing machines, fabric, leatherworking supplies, calligraphy/scribal supplies, needleworking supplies, shoes, pouches, books, food, Page School supplies, etc. We also are in need of clothing racks and hangers to display the garb.

Then that evening we will hold a Live Auction during the feast. Since we will only auction off 8-to-10 items, we're looking for things that are handmade or not easily available. As part of this auction, we would like each of the cantons to make a presentation of a "basket" or "box" full of handmade goodies for the Live Auction. If each canton desires to present one major handmade item instead of a basket or box of goodies...that's OK too! Let your imagination run wild! Be creative!

For questions or information, please contact the Auction coordinator, Isela di Bari, at dcobb@mail.meyernet.com or (831) 385-3040 (hm.)

Always yours in service,

Isela

venue, thanks to Mistress Katherine, and we've had more spaces open up! So if
you didn't get in, this is your chance! The class is on Sunday, January 22, at
the home of Katherine ni Cheallaigh of Skye in San Jose. I'm holding the spots
open for residents of Darkwood first, but on Monday I'll post this to SCA-West
and allow the rest of the kingdom a chance to sign up.

Don't miss this opportunity!

Rose of the many exclamation points!

Well, that'll teach me to post without reading all my messages -- Mistress
Katherine is in Royal Oaks (my handy-dandy yahoo! map says it's close to the
Watsonville airport), not in San Jose.

So now that I've thoroughly confused everybody:

The class is still on January 22, 1:00 to 4:30. In Royal Oaks. German costume.
 $5 for the handout.

I think I've got it right this time. :)

Due to a very fast paced move (we will be out of here by Feb 14th), I need
to find a replacement for the positions of Chatelaine and Baronial Archer.

If you are interested in taking either of these positions, pls contact me
directly.

As a service to those who may be interested in dance:

This is your reminder for Darkwood Dance, 3rd Thursday
of the month, January 19, 2006. We are in Morgan Hill at the home of
Adriana and Marco.

This is a beginning level dance practice. No previous
experience is necessary. The featured dances for
January/February will be: Review, in preperation for the Crosston Ball,
Hawksfeast, and White Shield.

Practice starts at 7:30 pm and runs to approximately
9:00 pm. We then break for root beer floats and
snacks. In courtesy to those who must go to
work/school early the next day (including our hosts),
we'd like to try to be prompt starting and stopping.
We suggest street clothes, rather than garb, for
practice. Clean, soft-soled shoes are a bonus.

added to the Darkwood Dance List in yahoo groups,

Message-ID: <43CC0A58.30800@santiagosmagic.com>

Greetings;

As many of you know, Henry and Eriney are going to be leaving our fair
lands and moving out of kingdom.

For a long time now they have hosted the Canton of Caer Darth website
and mail list, but once they are gone this is not going to be something
they will be able to continue doing.

So, to that end, we will be making some changes. I will be taking over
these duties.

The new website will be located at:

http://www.cantonofcaerdarth.org

and the new mail list will be a yahoo group. The information for the
yahoo group is below.

Post message: cantonofcaerdarth@yahoogroups.com
Subscribe: cantonofcaerdarth-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Unsubscribe: cantonofcaerdarth-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com
List owner: cantonofcaerdarth-owner@yahoogroups.com

The yahoo group is currently available for signing up. The old list is
still functioning, however we will be making the official change over at
the end of this month! So please update your mailing lists
appropriately.

The new website is on-line. It is currently a duplicate of the old
website but will be completely updated at the end of this month as well
as we work out the changes in the Canton.

Thank you for your attention,

Okay, I have received messages from almost everyone saying that they are
sick, or the family is sick, or they can't come for some other reason,
so we are going to cancel choir practice for tonight. Rest and get
well, my friends. My best to you and your families. If all goes well,
we will meet next Tuesday at Anne's house.

Darkwood Choir practice for Tuesday, Jan. 24, Seaside

Hi, all. The Darkwood Choir will meet for practice tomorrow night at
the home of Anne and Lucius. Please bring your favorite tea.

We will discuss and practice music for upcoming events, and for our
wedding gig in April.

Time: Tuesday, January 24, 7:30 - 9:30 pm

Place: 222 Bastogne Rd, Seaside, CA

Directions:

Take Hwy. 1 to the Ft. Ord/CSUMB main entrance exit (on maps this is
Light Fighter Dr.).
At the 3rd light, turn RIGHT onto General Jim Moore Blvd. (the right
lane heads with an island split).
At the second light, turn RIGHT onto Normandy.
Go past the stop sign, and at the next corner, turn LEFT onto Salerno.
Take the first RIGHT onto Bastogne.

Anne's house is the third on the left. To find the front door, take the
path to the left of the driveway.

If you get lost, Anne's phone number is 831-394-1626. Unfortunately,
cell phone reception in the area is spotty.

(Next week's practice will be at Christpohe's place in Marina.)

See you there.

Message-ID: <20060124063825.98485.qmail@web51415.mail.yahoo.com>

Dance class will start at about 7pm and go to 9pm. For the next
few months we'll be focusing on new dances La Francoise
Nouvelle, or old dances that need some polish, such as Dolce
Amoroso Fuco.

Subject: [Darkwood-SCA] Darkwood Panel
Message-ID: <005501c6229a$841c1a20$0b0aa8c0@MTKC20>

Good morning,

As most of you know by now, the Barony of Darkwood is creating a tapestry of approximately 23 panels which will be presented to Their Excellencies and the Barony at Darkwood's 20th Birthday next year at the White Shield Tourney & Feast. Each of the embroidered panels are recording a bit of Darkwood history.

This morning, we were notified that the panel depicting the Barony's annual Arts & Sciences event is available and needs an embroiderer. All of these panels have been designed by Lord Raymond von dem Lowengrab, a wonderful artist whose works have graced the pages of our monthly Drum newsletter.

The design has already been transferred to the fabric and the fabric has been mounted on stretcher bars. The "kit" includes the necessary Appleton wool thread, needles, and embroidery instructions.

If you or someone you know would like to embroider this panel, please contact one of the following people as soon as possible: Eric Bjornsson at redbear@transedge.com OR Catherine Lorraine of Stonegate Manor at connyftz@inreach.com OR Isela at dcobb@mail.meyernet.com

This is a fun project, and I'm sure you will be surprised at how quickly the stitching will go when using wool thread!

Yours in service,

Isela di Bari
(One of the Project coordinators)

The forecast for tomorrow actually doesn't look too bad -- chance of showers, worse to the north than down in the Hollister direction. We have inside space, so come on down and enjoy a warm feast and a cozy afternoon! I haven't been able to reach the baronial archer to confirm his plans, but I know in other years the Darkwood archers have not been turned aside by a few raindrops.

The Baronial Archer has LOTS of plans for tomorrow. But I'm not at
liberty to discuss them... you'll just have to show up tomorrow to
find out what "interesting" things he's come up with...

Message-ID: <35206.209.232.250.5.1138676831.squirrel@webmail.redshift.com>

This month's Darkwood meeting is Monday, February 6, at 7:00 pm at the
Elkhorn Yacht Club. Dinner service permitting, we will start as close to
7:00 as possible.

If you have anything you'd like to add to the agenda, please let me know
by noon on Monday.

Subject: [Darkwood-SCA] Darkwood A&S workshop - Banner Painting
Message-ID: <1138739692.43dfc9ec3f8dd@webmail.got.net>

Greetings Darkwood!

This Sunday, we'll be holding a banner painting workshop at the home of
Awrabella and Eric in Hollister. Prepare for the opening of tourney season by
painting yourself a spiffy new banner, or help get ready for White Shield by
painting the flags for the new tourney field ropes.

Things will get started about 11:00 a.m., and go as late as people want to.
There's room for several sewing machines, so if you have portables, please
bring them. We'll have silk and linen for the banners, paints and brushes and
resist and stuff. If you have pvc or other frames, please bring them -- we'll
have a few, but probably not enough for everybody.

Please rsvp so I can make sure there are enough supplies available.

Rose

Message-ID: <43DFE055.5030304@pacbell.net>

There will be no Darkwood Choir practice this week. It was scheduled to
be at Christophe's, but he is quite ill with a stomach flu. Since a
suitable replace site has not appeared on such short notice, we are
cancelling practice for this week.

I will shortly post what I have completed so far of the wedding music,
along with a list of "assignments" of which voice parts each of you in
the choir should begin learning.

This is your reminder for Darkwood Dance, 1st Thursday
of the month, February 2, 2006. We are in Morgan Hill at the home of

This is a beginning level dance practice. No previous
experience is necessary. The featured dances for
January/February will be: Review, in preperation for White Shield.
