Practice is open to everyone with an interest, but we would especially like to invite all Husscarls or would-be Husscarls to our practice. Hi all,

We're cancelling MdR's February meeting due to it falling on Valentine's
day. I spoke with Anton and he doesn't thing we *need* another meeting
before Prize Tourney, and with Estrella, there just isn't another day to
which we can move it. Not and have our autocrat in attendance.

So everyone have a great Valentine's day and we'll see you at Prize
Tourney, Whispering Pines Park, Monterey, on Saturday the 26th. Site opens
at 9:30. Great warm-up for White Shield the following week, right?!

Christophe - nothing like a blatant plug tossed in for good measure, eh?

P.S. Check the "To" field. If there's anyone not there who should be, or
would like to be, *PLEASE* let me know. If there's anyone I'm sending this
to who is sick of receiving spam from me, also let me know. Want to make
sure I'm sending this to all, and only, the people who want to see it.

Message-ID: <20050209185655.57720.qmail@web51410.mail.yahoo.com>

Item of interest from our Northern Neighbors, Southern Shores:

Newcomers Tourney is once again coming around once again and we
encourage everyone, not just those new to the SCA to attend. Not only
will we be having our standard First Year, Second Year, and Prize
Tourneys, but we have added so much more to this years event. For
those newcomers, and not so newcomers that are not as interested in
fighting, we are offering you classes this year. The list of them will
be up on the website soon www.southern-shores.org. But what I can tell
you right now is that we will be offering many basic courses to get you
started in a new Hobby/addiction. These include Needle working,
Calligraphy, Cooking, Brewing and Weaving with more to come! Have
children that are also interested, well, we'll have games and a Page
School set up for them as well. Beginning Fighters will also have
class tracks as well (for when they are not competing in the Tourney)

We are also bringing back the Second Annual Used Armor Garage Sale.
Fighters... do you have approximately a ton of old armor just taking up
space in your garage/living room/hallway. Significant others of those
fighters... are you tired of telling him/her to get their armor and put
it somewhere where your not tripping over it? Have you threatened to
throw out that old stuff that's just collecting rust in the garage?
Well we're giving you that chance. Anyone can bring their armor to
donate, we'll try to find it a home that it will be seeing some use.
Remember that newcomers sometimes are a little lacking in the cash
department and anything that they can get for cheap will help them get
out onto the field so you can hit them with sticks.

We also have a Arts & Sciences Competition for this event. The contest
is "Best garb for under 25$" this is to show newcomers that you don't
need to spend a fortune to look good. Undergarments which are not
visible and shoes don't have to be counted in the finished outfit for
purposes of meeting the $25.00 limit, although if you can manage to
include them you'll get extra points. Entries must include an
itemized list of materials and their costs. If you didn't buy an item,
then please explain how you acquired it ("found in a dumpster", "my
sister was throwing out her wedding dress", etc.) Questions? Contact
Catherine Kenda of Stillwater (catic15@earthlink.net).

The event will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at Kirk Park, 1601 Foxworthy
Ave., San Jose, 95118 (behind the Community Center)

We'll thats about it for now. any questions please feel free to e-mail
me.

A reminder to all that the monthly West Kingdom College of Heralds meets
this Sunday in SAN JOSE (instead of Berkeley). If you are at all interested
in book heraldry (names and devices), this is a fantastic opportunity to
learn. If you are in the greater Santa Cruz area and want to attend, I'll
be happy to provide transportation, at least until my car is full.

Why am I shilling this? Because if we don't get enough attendance at the
San Jose meetings, they will likely move. Not back to Berkeley, but to
somewhere in Cynagua. I don't want to have to drive that far! <g>

Finally, if you haven't registered your name and/or device yet and would
like to, talk to Adriana (our Baronial Herald), or myself (just a loud
person in general - I'll be at White Shield for sure). I'd like to see more
heraldic display within our Barony!

In service,

- Naadirah, herald-at-large

My apologies and regrets, but Darkwood Choir practice for tomorrow,
Tuesday, Feb. 15 is now CANCELLED. Too many of our key members are
either en route to Estrella or desperately packing for it, and I am
having car problems.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 22 in Del Rey Oaks. Whether this
practice takes place will hinge on whether our choir members (especially
our hosts) are back from Estrella and actually recovered enough to
participate. I will let you all know as soon as I know myself.

Again, my apologies. And all of you who are going to Estrella -- drive
carefully, and have fun!

My only guess as to the title of the piece is 'Right-hand sword, to half-round shield'

Hi, Isaac. That piece was written by Alessandro chi Marestrale. I will

might want to submit it to Hirsch to be given a well-deserved place in

Hi again. We have a NEW PRACTICE LOCATION for this evening, Tuesday,
Feb. 22nd. We will meet at the home of Gareth of Fenby. Bring your
favorite tea. I'm sorry that this location is so far north (San Jose),
but because of several converging factors this is the only place
available to us at this time.

Please notify anyone you may know who is interested in the choir, but
is not yet on the Darkwood or Darkwood Choir mailing list.

TIME: 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Tuesday, Feb. 22

PLACE: Gareth of Fenby's house:

730 Dana Ave, San Jose

DIRECTIONS:
Method one:
Take your best route to 880 near the San Jose Airport. Get off at the
Bascom Ave. exit and go south on Bascom. Turn left onto Naglee. The
second street on your left (and I belive the first signal light) is Dana
Ave. As you approach it, you will see the long wrought-iron fence and
large trees of the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. Turn left on Dana.
Gareth's home is a large two-story house on the right, near the corner.
There is ample parking across the street, alongside the Rose Garden.

Method two:
From 101 north, take the 280 exit to San Jose (north), then to 87 north
(Guadalupe). Get off at Taylor St. and go west (left, across the
freeway. W. Taylor St. is renamed to Naglee when it crosses the
Alameda. Continue on Naglee to Dana, then turn right onto Dana.
Gareth's home is a large two-story house on the right, near the corner.
There is ample parking across the street, alongside the Rose Garden.

Method three:
From 101 north, take 85 to 87 north, then proceed as in method two.

** Pet Warning ** There is a dog in the house.

See you there!

John

I don't usually ask favors of people, and I'm having a hard time
making myself do so now. If you are willing, please send
energy/pray/Think Good Thoughts for me.

My first cervical biopsy showed "high grade dysplasia", which is to
say abnormal cells that are just short of cancerous. I need to have a
cone biopsy which may or may not get all of the abnormal cells. If it
doesn't, I'll need a hysterectomy.

I have pre-op on the 24th of Feb (tomorrow!) at 3:30 including a
blood draw *gibber!*, then the biopsy on the 3rd of March at 12:30,
then a post-op on the 31st of March at 9 am.

If I make it to White Shield, I'll be stuck in a draped chaise lounge
most of the time.

Thank you for whatever you are willing to give.

Cerridwen, MKA Elsa

Subject: [Darkwood-SCA] Darkwood Dance - 1st Thursday
Message-ID: <20050227202005.77379.qmail@web51408.mail.yahoo.com>

This is your reminder for Darkwood Dance, 1st Thursday of the month,
March 3rd.

This is a beginning level dance practice. No previous experience is
necessary. The featured dances for March/April will be Lorrayne
Alman, Bransle Official, and Black Nag. We will be doing mainly these
dances at each practice for the ensuing two months

Practice starts at 7:30 pm and runs to approximately 9:00 pm. We then
break for root beer floats and snacks. In courtesy to those who must go
to work/school early the next day (including our hosts), we'd like to
try to be prompt starting and stopping. We suggest street clothes,
rather than garb, for practice. Clean, soft-soled shoes are a bonus.

As a bonus, on the 5th Thursday, March 31st, we will be having a
special program - A Souped Up Review!!!!. We will begin at 7 pm with a
soup supper, then review all the dances we have learned so far.

Darkwood Dance List in yahoo groups, please contact:
